Fated to Death - Nashitah Hussain
Chapter 1
My eyelids flutter open and finally let the light in as I squint and examine the unfamiliar surroundings. The basement is cold and metallic, the cement floors have cracks in them, and the ceiling is covered in ancient pipes winding in grotesque angles with spiders and rats crawling into the dusty old pipes. The basement is completely dark with a little bit of light coming through the tiny, rusted windows. My bruised wrists and ankles are chained to the pole in the room with a harsh rope digging into my skin.
Noticing movement to my right, I looked to the side and found two girls in a worse condition than I am. They are half-naked and have extremely deep cuts in their skin, burn marks from cigarettes on their legs and what look like bite marks. Feeling extremely terrified, I started screaming like a banshee, thrashing around and banging my hands on the ground.
Suddenly, the door bolts open and a man comes through, glaring at us. He was a tall, bald man with no facial hair, a crooked nose, thin, pale lips and beady brown eyes which feel like lasers cutting through my skin. He is carrying a chair which he placed in front of me. Taking out a handkerchief, he carefully swept the dust away from it. By now, the other two girls are awake and look extremely frightened. He looks at me \ without saying anything, his dark and intense gaze makes my heart jump and my nerves start racing.
I’m pretty sure you don’t know why you are here.
He said finally, breaking the tension.
‘It’s okay though, you’ll get to know everything in time. For now, just know that you’re going to be here for a very long time, so make yourself comfortable." And with that, he left us in silence.
Taking the opportunity to understand more about the situation, I started talking to the two other girls with me.
Do you know where you are?
I ask them. They shake their heads, no. One of the girls, the one with blonde hair, replied to me.
No, we have no idea about anything happening here other than the fact that our kidnapper has many personalities and our names. I’m Blair and this is Krista.
The blonde girl says pointing to the other girl.
I’m Ophelia, how long have you been here?
I inquired.
Not very long, I think it’s only been like 5 days,
Krista replied.
A very long 5 days though..
says Blair.
That was the end of our conversation. We were too scared to speak thinking he would come in with every word that came out of our mouths. Hours passed and then, the door crashed open. It was our kidnapper.
Come here.
He said angrily, pointing to Krista. Krista being stubborn refuses his command and shakes her head, no. Our keeper grew angrier and he reached his limit, taking the iron rod which was close to him and hitting Krista and Blair on the head. I didn’t know why he hit Blair but I was too scared to ask or speak to him. That’s how Krista and Blair died and this is when I started to fear for my life.
Chapter 2
Amuffled conversation woke me up. I am still terrified from the incident yesterday, I want to take a rest, I want to forget everything for now.
I dreamed of me being a child again, eating lunch with my family and going to the park later on. I was quickly disappointed when I saw the rusty ceiling above me, it brought me back to reality.
I slowly sat up and walked to the steel door, looking through its keyhole. I was curious about whom my kidnapper was talking to.
We really don’t have much time
I heard a gentle voice. Do you really think it will work?
It should. We had been preparing for months just for this. She seems to be average but she’ll be a perfect test subject
Another voice said.
All I can see is a floral, red skirt and a pair of black high heels. I assumed she was talking to my kidnapper, and referring to their conversation, she was likely on his side. I still believed I had a low chance of persuading her to help me get out of here.
Is she in this room?
She asked, coming closer to my door. I rushed back to the bed, embracing my knees and not taking my eyes off the door. Right after I settled down, the door slowly opened, and as the woman came in, my eyes widened in surprise and fear. The woman was actually my keeper, wearing a dress.
Oh, here you are sweetheart.
His voice was gentle and his behavior was not even close to his previous one. It was like someone else was in his body right now. I just wanted to check if you’re really capable of this experiment.
He continued as he started moving closer to me. You look scared but don’t worry, he won’t hurt you.
He said, referring to himself. You don’t even know how important you are.
What do you mean by it?
Why am I so important?" I asked him shakily.
It’s not the right time now. I have some unfinished business to complete.
He went back to the door, grabbing its handle. Be good, won’t you?
And he left me alone, in the dark and dusty room.
I didn’t dare move. It was weird. Really weird. He was actually talking about himself, after making up a complete conversation. All I could think about was the problem he might have and I am scared, no, terrified.
I lay down on my bed with a big sigh. This is how it is then; I don’t have a chance to escape. Thinking about my kidnapper makes me miserable but distracting myself is extremely hard. Everything in this room reminds me of him. So, I just closed my eyes and forced myself to sleep. It seemed like taking a nap was the only escape from this hell.
-1 Hour later-
The loud squeak of the steel door woke me up. It was dark in the room, so I thought my kidnapper was in here while I was sleeping. The silly thought he may have been watching me during my sleep made my heart race a bit. But I quickly shushed these upsetting thoughts and turned to my other side.
A bright line of light showing through the room caught my attention. And there was a shadow in the center of it.
I quickly sat up after finding
