The Magic Telescope
S
hruti was a very curious 8-year-old girl who loved gazing up at the night sky. She would spend hours trying to spot different planets, stars and constellations. One day, as she was stargazing from her bedroom window, she noticed something strange. A small package had appeared on her desk.
Shruti opened the package and found a note that said For your curiosity - use it well!
Inside was a golden telescope unlike any she had seen before. It was small enough to hold in her hands but had strange runes and symbols carved all over it. When she peered through the eyepiece, she gasped. She could see planets and stars so close; it was as if she could touch them!
This must be a magic telescope!
she thought excitedly. She decided to use it to explore the solar system and satisfy her endless curiosity. First, she focused the telescope on Mercury and was amazed to see volcanoes spewing lava on its surface. Next, she viewed Venus and its dense atmosphere wrapped all around the planet.
On Mars, she spotted dust storms raging across its rusty red landscape. She noticed two small moons, Phobos and Deimos, orbiting the planet. Past Mars was the asteroid belt, filled with countless rocky chunks of material left over from the formation of the planets. Shruti spotted the dwarf planet Ceres among the asteroids.
When she looked at Jupiter, the largest planet, its Great Red Spot jumped out at her. She saw three of Jupiter's 79 moons - Io, Europa and Ganymede. Saturn surprised her with its magnificent rings, made of countless pieces of icy material. Its moons, Titan and Enceladus, looked colourful under the magic telescope.
Uranus showed Shruti its unique sideways tilt as it orbited the sun. Its five largest moons - Miranda, Ariel, Umbriel, Titania and Oberon - floated around the aquamarine planet. Neptune was the farthest known planet from the sun as she observed its swirling blue-green atmosphere and winds gusting at 1500 miles per hour. Its largest moon Triton had geysers gushing icy particles.
After her wondrous tour of the solar system with her magic telescope, Shruti had learned so much. Her curiosity about space had been satisfied but had also been sparked even more. She couldn't wait to see what more mysteries the universe held!
Aarya and the Magic Compass
A
arya was an 8 year old boy who loved exploring the forest near his home in the mountains. One day, as he was venturing deep into the woods, he suddenly lost track of which way was home. He turned around and around trying to figure out the path but everywhere looked the same.
I'm lost!
cried Aarya worriedly. That's when he heard a tiny voice say Over here!
. Aarya turned around and saw his old compass lying on the ground. Except this compass was talking!
Who said that?
asked a surprised Aarya. I did!
replied the compass. My name is Compass and I'm a magic compass. I can help you find your way home.
Wow a talking compass! Can you really help me?
asked Aarya excitedly. Of course, that's what I'm here for. Do you know which direction is which?
asked Compass.
Aarya shook his head no. Then let me teach you. I always point towards North. So when the arrow is pointing that way, you will be going North,
said Compass.
Aarya turned Compass around slowly understanding where each direction was. Got it! So that way is North. Then the opposite side must be South.
said Aarya confidently.
Correct!
said Compass. The direction to your right is East and direction to your left is West. Now you know the four main directions. I will help guide you home safely.
With Compass to guide him, Aarya was able to learn his way around the forest. Whenever he came to a fork in the path, Compass would point him North, South, East or West depending on which way was right.
Soon the forest started looking familiar. After a while, Aarya spotted his favorite big tree in the distance. He had reached the edge of the forest near his village.
We made it! Thank you Compass for teaching me about directions and helping me find my way back home,
said a relieved Aarya.
You're very welcome. Remember to always check your compass if you ever feel lost. And don't wander too deep into the forest without me,
said Compass.
From that day on, Aarya and his magic compass Compass went on many wonderful adventures in the forest. And Aarya always made sure to pay attention to which direction was which so he never got lost again.
