      NEW YORK CITY.  1975.

      CHAPTER ONE

      Who the hell are you and what the hell do you want?

      Good the hell evening.  I’m Lee Hacklyn.  Private Investigator, Champion of the Oppressed and Nightly Flosser.  The hell.

      You look like a Sears Catalog underwear model.

      That’s the nicest thing anyone’s ever said to me.

      Get off my property or I’ll knock your head in.  You’re trespassing and that’s illegal.

      It is?  Holy Moley!  Are you a lawyer, sir?

      I’m on welfare.

      I was standing on the front porch of a house that wasn’t long for a wrecking ball.

      It was eight pm, snowing and I was in Nassau, one of the Big Apple’s poorest neighborhoods.

      The man looming in front of me was Ed Strong, but his physique was anything but.

      His corpulent frame was packed into a dirty white tank top.

      His jeans were caked with mud and the hems were frayed.

      The knees had holes in them.

      I guess some people would consider this fashionable in woke, snow-flakey 2024.

      You didn’t answer my question.
