Lee Hacklyn Private Investigator in Some Of My Best Friends Are Dead - John Leister

    New York City.  1977.

    CHAPTER ONE

    Oh, my God!  That’s Roy!

Who’s Roy, I asked, dreading the answer.

What do you think this is on my finger?  A Cheerio?

    You said you were divorced.

I wanted you in my bed.

    Is that where we are?

    I was still hammered.

I put my feet on a hardwood floor.  At least, that’s where I was aiming.

They landed on something furry and I screamed.

    So did What’s-Her-Face.

Then she sneezed, coughed and hacked up some phlegm.

    Great.

Now I have the What’s-Her-Face virus.

I’ve faced down some of the meanest men on God’s Green-and-Blue Earth, but nothing, and I mean nothing, is more terrifying than a woman who asks a man she just slept with, what’s my name, and the answer she receives is stone silence.

What I stepped on rolled over and hissed at me.

Did you just step on Precious?

I didn’t mean to.  If it makes you feel any better, I now have nine toes instead of ten.  I hope you’re not lack toes intolerant.

You’re not funny.  You’re disgusting.  I can’t believe I let you inside of me.  I’ll be douching all day.

I put my socks on and said, Blinded by the light...

    Do you remember my name?

Your what now?  Hey, you’ve got the most beautiful eyes I’ve ever seen.

    You don’t do you?

    Butterflies manifested in my stomach.

My clothes were strewn about.  My Browning was on
