    INTRODUCTION

The first law of motion by Newton says that an object in motion keeps moving. This also applies to us when we set goals. When we’re actively working towards our goals, we feel unstoppable and achieve a lot. But what happens when we stop?

It becomes difficult to start again, and we may procrastinate or feel frustrated. If you’re feeling stuck, lacking motivation, or overwhelmed, don’t worry. This book will help you get out of your slump and regain your motivation. Feeling stuck is temporary, and there are things you can do to get back on track. We all experience moments of being stuck. Even I struggle with simple tasks sometimes.

But I know that motivation can come back as quickly as it disappeared. By applying what you learn in this book, you can build momentum and achieve more of your goals.

The book is divided into parts that will help you assess your situation, build momentum, sustain motivation, and provide strategies to rebuild and maintain motivation. Are you ready to boost your motivation and confidently work towards your goals? Great! Let’s get started.

Stop — Do that one thing now

Pause for a moment. Are you lacking motivation? Do you feel stuck right now? When we’re stuck, we tend to overthink and worry unnecessarily. To help you get unstuck, let’s take a step back and look at your situation objectively. But instead of going through the entire book or trying to inspire you, I’ll tell you a simple truth: there’s one thing you can do right now to get unstuck. By completing this one task, you can quickly change your emotional state and get back on track. I don’t want you to keep thinking. Overthinking is likely the reason you feel stuck. What I want you to do is take action.

How? Here’s what you should do:

Find one task that you’ve been avoiding for a long time. And do it now!

Close this book and go complete that task. See what happens next.

If you’re unsure which task to tackle, ask yourself these questions:

⦁Which task should I complete, even though I don’t want to?

⦁Which task, if completed right now, would give me the most peace of mind?

(It’s probably the one you can’t stop thinking or worrying about.)

In most cases, taking action is the key to getting unstuck. One of my friends shared a message on Facebook that resonates with this idea, from a book by Dan Millman:

"To change the course of your life, choose one of two basic methods. You can either:

Spend your energy and attention trying to fix your mind, find your focus, affirm your power, free your emotions, and visualize positive outcomes until you develop enough confidence, courage, determination, and motivation to do what you need to do, or

    Just do it."

I encourage you to just do it. Put this book down and complete that task you’ve been putting off for far too long. Maybe it’s filing your tax return, finishing a project you abandoned, or cleaning your house. I once had an accountability partner who had been procrastinating on laying the floor in his hallway for months. Although it would have only taken him a couple of days, he couldn’t bring himself to do it. I advised him to focus solely on completing that specific task and forget about everything else. Guess what? He finished the floor and gained a surge of motivation that propelled him to tackle many other household tasks.

That’s the power of momentum. I strongly believe that you’ll experience the same when you finally complete a task or chore you’ve been avoiding for a long time. Remember, momentum is built through action, not just thinking. So, it’s time for you to take action and start building that momentum.

Once you’ve completed your task, feel free to come back to this book, and we’ll continue building momentum together.

Now, it’s time to get your body moving. As renowned life coach Tony Robbins says, Emotion is energy in motion. Stand up and start moving your body. Do some push-ups, shadow boxing, or jumping jacks. Just get your body in motion. If possible, speak out loud and use a strong voice.

Now, go ahead and do that task. I’ll be here waiting.

    1. EMBRACE YOUR CURRENT SITUATION

Do you often criticize yourself for procrastinating or not completing tasks? If that’s the case, I encourage you to fully accept where you are right now. Instead of dwelling on past mistakes and wishing for a different outcome, show yourself some compassion. The fact that you’re hard on yourself indicates a genuine desire to move forward in life.

Deep down, you care about yourself and want the best. Recognize this truth and let it sink in. We tend to believe that self-criticism motivates us, but it’s ineffective and emotionally distressing. Research has shown that being kind to ourselves is a better motivator.

So why not learn to be kind to yourself? It’s important to accept that feeling great all the time is not realistic. Negative feelings are temporary, and eventually, you will feel better about yourself. The more self-compassionate you become, the quicker you will regain your motivation and the less suffering you’ll impose on yourself.

Practicing self-kindness has been immensely helpful for me. For example, I’ve struggled with writing this book and others, but I understand that it’s a normal part of the process and being human. Nobody is perfect. Imagine how dull life would be without challenges. Accomplishments wouldn’t feel meaningful if they were easy to achieve.

In my book Master Your Emotions, I discuss how feelings are signals that something needs attention. Feeling stuck or unmotivated isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Emotions provide feedback and indicate that you need to make changes. Lack of motivation might suggest that you need to clarify your life’s true desires, resolve unfinished tasks, declutter your environment, focus on activities you love, eliminate draining activities, distance yourself from toxic people, take better care of yourself, rest, and more.

There are various reasons why you may lack motivation, and we’ll explore many of them in this book. The key point is that where you are right now is exactly where you’re meant to be. Stop striving to be somewhere else and start fresh from your current position. Most importantly, go easy on yourself! Give yourself permission to let go of worries for a while. There’s no need to carry the weight of the world on your shoulders. Just relax.

    2. STATE THE FACTS

Do you often find yourself judging and criticizing yourself, or blowing things out of proportion? If so, it’s likely that you’re paying too much attention to negative thoughts and not looking at the facts objectively. Negative thoughts become the center of your attention when you’re in a negative state, and as you identify with them, you create even more negative emotions.

It’s important to remember that most mental suffering is optional. It occurs when you over-identify with negative emotions and give them more power than they have. Take a step back and examine your current situation.

    Ask yourself some questions:

    - Will this matter in twenty years?

    - Have I felt this way before?

    - Is this really a big deal?

    - Does this event have global significance?

    - What can I do about it right now?

For example, when I couldn’t work on this book
