Clogged Conundrum

It was mid-morning and Mackenzie Jones stood on her front porch, clinging to two overfilled grocery bags while she sorted through the keys in her hand, feeling for the right one.

As usual, she’d been late getting the boys to school. After being grilled by the office administrator to get them admitted to class, she’d made the rounds at the grocery store. Now she was home and looking forward to a cup of coffee and an hour of silence before Sam popped in for a quick lunch date.

Through her sense of touch and sheer determination, Mac forced the house key into the lock and managed just enough grip to twist the knob. The door moved an inch, and she kicked it open the rest of the way. She tripped over the threshold, and the paper sack clutched in her left arm ripped. Pasta and marshmallow packages fell to the floor, and she cursed under her breath while she shoved the door closed with her hip. With half her groceries slipping from her grip, the last thing she needed was for one of the pets to escape.

The bag continued to rip as she made her way to the kitchen and by the time she set the sack on the island counter, the only thing left to unpack was a bottle of mouthwash, a package of floss, and a box of snack cakes.
