Spatula Strike

Agolden shaft of light filtered through the kitchen window, casting a halo over Mackenzie Jones’ mug of tea. The afternoon sun reflected in the spoon’s handle while Mac stirred sugar into the piping hot drink, causing a curl of perfect steam to rise through the air.

Sam? Mac called over her shoulder. Get in here and take a picture of this cup of tea for your socials before the light changes!

She heard him spring up from the living room sofa. He had a burgeoning online photography portfolio; mostly snapshots of artfully plated macaroni and cheese, carefully arranged corn dog bouquets, and blurry smears of suds and color from inside drive-through car washes.

Wow. Look at the body on that steam! Sam joined Mac at the counter and viewed the mug from eye-level. He lifted his mobile phone, framing the image on the screen. He frowned. Can you move your book and the sugar container out of the way? There’s some grit on the counter. Wipe that up, too.

Mac bit back a complaint as she followed his directions. Why did he have to be so picky? He wouldn’t even have seen her glowing mug if she had not invited him in to take the shot to begin with.
