CHAPTER 1, Early Life
Laying in front of me is a manila envelope with the heading, The history of Jack Stevens
The name doesn't mean much as I have had a few names through out my life. But, to keep things simple I'll use it during this period of time. The documents start with the birth on December tenth 1994. I was born, in the state of Nevada, in the city of lights, Las Vegas. the first five years of my life is ordinary. But at age six a sickness hit my body and it was a war to save my life. They never truly knew what it was, but the consensus was Bacterial inflammation. A year later the effects were gone and my life continued on. At nine Mom and dad got worried as I was not getting any taller that they could see. They took me to a number of doctors and other than my height everything was normal. I would be short and hopefully in years to come I would start growing again. I started growing taller at age ten but it was slow, oh so slow.
For a youngster life in Las Vegas is rather boring. You soon get used to the noise, lights, and the odd people that pass through in search of winning large sums of money. At the ripe old age of ten I met an elderly black man who, for the sake of company, apprenticed me in the art of shining shoes. Every day after school, and on week ends, I would spend time at the shoe shine stand. I learned a lot about life from that old gentleman. He and I worked side by side for a couple years. Then one day He wasn't there. The officer on the corner said he had went to the hospital with chest pains and had passed away last night. The fun had went out of shining shoes that moment. I made a sign and put it against one of the chairs. It read, 'closed till further notice.' Then I left, never to return. Things were quiet for a month or so. Then I met Ray. He said his name was Ray the Hacker, but I had my doubts. He also said he was fourteen. I just nodded and said nothing. We hung around for a few weeks and one night he says, I gotta get some dough. There's a little shop a couple streets over from that shoe shine stand you used to work at. I can get in and get some goodies, but I need someone outside to keep a watch out for the law. You interested? I'll give you ten percent of what I get.
Sorry Ray. I don't believe in breaking the law.
Okay, see ya around.
Then he was around the corner and out of my life. I probably should have told my dad and he could have sent word to look out for this boy to the police. On the other hand it might just be big talk to impress me. That lapse in judgment almost created a hole in my heart. A week later he tried to rob my dad as he went to his car. Big mistake. Dad told me he accidentally dropped his money clip and was starting to bend over to pick it up. Ray had the same idea and as he squatted down Dad laid a haymaker on the side of his head. He was out before he hit the concrete. Dad told me and mom about it when he got home from making out the police report. Ray had managed to pick up a gun in his travels. Now he was going to learn some hard lessons in prison. I slept a little better that night.
CHAPTER 2, Meeting Brenda
It was just a month later Dad got his managerial position he was after. He took a week off and we went on a vacation to die for. We flew down to a place called Barbados and just soaked up the sunshine and food. We also spent a lot of time in the water. Too bad we had to leave, but dad had a job to return to and didn't want to be late the first day. Mom enjoyed the vacation more than I. She and dad both needed a break. When we got back from vacation we found we had new neighbors. It was a young couple who had an eight year old daughter. Mom and dad invited them over to get acquainted and welcome them to the neighborhood. The girl, Anna, asked if I knew how to play checkers. Her dad taught her and he told her she was pretty good. We set up the board and she said, Seeing as how I'm a girl I should have the choice of colors and I want red.
So I rotated the board and we started. She won the first game and she rather loudly told her dad she had beat me. The second game I won and she was very quiet. The third game she kept making mistakes and wanted to take a move back and try something else. I could tell she was seething because she lost the second game. It was messing up her mind. After losing the third game she jumped up and yelled, You cheated. I know you did cause I'm the better player. She tipped the board over onto the floor and stomped out to the kitchen. I decided to stay where I was. No use making things worse. After they left Dad patted me on the shoulder and said.
Well done. You avoided making a scene and you know what she is like. If you don't get to be friends, that's fine with me." We never were friends.
Just past my thirteenth birthday I entered the ninth grade. Wow! I was a freshman. I was in high school. Life took on new meaning. I had reached the height of five foot six. A little short, but not bad. I had changed schools and didn't know anyone at this school. But I would in time. That first time I entered the high school I thought something terrible had happened. There were people running a muck in the corridors. I backed up against a wall and was ready to bolt when a hand touched my arm and a voice said, Relax. It's always like this the first day here. Tomorrow it will be quite the opposite. All will be subdued, walking slowly to their home room and answering roll call.
I turned and a young girl about my height was standing next to me with a big grin. Welcome to the freshman class. I'm in room 207, one floor up.
I'm also up one floor in room 206.
My name is Brenda, Brenda stiles. and you are?
I'm sorry. I'm Jack Stevens. I came over from Fullerton middle school. Parents relocated here for a new job my dad got in his fight to get to the top. It certainly is different here.
You will get used to it in a day or two. My dad works here. He's a music teacher. I've spent quite a bit of time here the last two years waiting to ride home with him." Then a bell rang and the rush was on to get to home room.
When he entered the classroom the only seat not occupied was front and center in front of the teachers desk. After getting seated roll call started. The teacher, Miss Jenkins, called each name loudly and an answer, Here
, followed. With that finished she handed out stapled sheets with the location of subject room numbers and a map where they were located. There was a rustle of paper as everyone looked to find where they were going after leaving home room. After a few minutes she asked if there were any questions. No one raised their hand so she said
