CHAPTER 1 Time is Running Out
Twenty five light years from Earth there is a shimmer in the void and a strange craft emerges into normal space. Sitting in front of a large screen is a humanoid deep in thought. The organic brain in the craft asks if there is something amiss that she can help him with. No Muranna. I have to make some choices and I don't have a lot of time to make them.
It helps sometimes if you have an ear to listen to your thoughts.
Muranna, we've been together for three thousand years and we can be proud of our accomplishments. I'm nearing the end of my time on this plane of existence. I need to make some choices. Do I cease to exist and leave you to return to Central Ops for a replacement or can I find someone on my own. If I go with the latter choice you will have a chance to see what is available and, if suitable, you would have to help the chosen one adjust to life with you and learn what he or she would need to know to carry on our duties keeping peace in this sector. Secondly, we are at a mid point between two inhabited worlds that might have what I am looking for.
I have the two on screen and I would probably choose the one with the green tinge to it. The inhabitants are humanoid and would be easy to work with. There's less chance of discovery while scanning for a replacement.
Then the choice is made. Change vector and proceed to that planet.
Two days later they arrive and set an orbit. The scanning starts. After several days they have had no results. Taking a closer look at the inhabitants they find this will not work. They are tied to water, even though they live on land. One third of their day is spent under water. Though they have reached the point of sending robots to their moons and closer planets they will have to overcome the need for time spent under water to progress. I guess it's time to go to the other planet. My time is running out and that will be my last chance to find someone suitable to fill my shoes and bond with you.
Let's hope we find that one quickly then." Back into star drive and pushing the limit to the utmost speed, they arrived after three days and set up orbit. Shields were set up and they started their search. There was nothing to do now but wait.
Kepler left the bridge and went to his quarters. Sitting in his favorite chair he sips on a glass of Sirin Wine as he lets his mind wander over the years he has spent with Muranna and the scrapes they endured. There were some bad times, but they are overshadowed by all the good years spent together. Three thousand and seven years seems like a long time, yet he wished he had another three thousand years with his partner. He actually lived seven years longer than anyone in his family. His grandfather was the oldest member till now. Tipping his glass he said, Here's to you grandpa. I beat you by seven years
He finished his drink and went to his bed for a nap. In a couple days with luck they would have a candidate. He only slept for a few hours and was awakened by a chime from the speakers. What's up Muranna?
We have a distress call a few light years from us.
Input vector to intercept and put shields at half. Be up there in a few minutes.
Splashing a little water on his face to remove the cobwebs from his nap he goes to the bridge to see what the distress call is about. When they emerge once more into normal space they see a ship about the size of an escape pod floating near an asteroid. Hailing the vessel he finds it has a lone traveler inside whose star drive has failed. I'm sending a repair robot over to assess the problem. Be patient and he will be there shortly.
Muranna has already sent word to one of the repair robots and a service ship leaves the craft and goes to the little ship. It takes about six hours and the little ship is repaired and ready to continue on its journey. The repair robot returns and after a thorough check is put back on standby. With a thank you for the help the little ship shimmers and is gone. Setting the vector to return to Terra, he relaxes for a bit and lets his mind wander over the past.
Looking at the chrona on the bulkhead he sees it is time for dinner. Down to the dining area he goes and after taking a seat brings up the menu on the table top. Not being overly hungry he orders a vegetable plate and a glass of Servino. Within minutes a robot brings his dinner and sets it down. You're relieved.
The robot turns and says, As you wish, Commander.
Then he leaves. After dinner he thinks about the gym, but the thought of sweat changes his mind. After all he won't be here much longer. His thoughts are in turmoil so he heads to the one place he has always used to relax. Once in the solarium he gets another Servino and sits down to ponder his life as an elite peace keeper and soldier. His life started as a child on a freighter with his mother, who was a cook. Those were marvelous years. He spent much of his time having his mother teach him how to prepare the foods for the crew. The Captain of the cargo ship taught him how to set up a vector for the next planet they were traveling to, along with emergency procedures if they ran into trouble. Yes, life was good for fifteen years.
When he turned fifteen the first Rycin war had been waging for ten years. It was then Kepler was taken aboard a light cruiser and forced to enlist in the service. When the war ended he was a twenty five year old left with nothing. A Major in the United Planets vessel he was on saw the problem and offered him a job in the Peacekeepers Organization. With nothing else to look forward to he accepted and was sent to the Academy to train. Ten years later he was given his degree and Lieutenant's Bars
for being in the top of his class. His first assignment was with a five member crew in a scout ship out on the edge of the galaxy. That tour lasted a little over three years when, returning to base, an unknown craft attacked and destroyed the scout. He happened to be near the emergency life pods and was the sole survivor. A cruiser in the area received the signal from the pod and he was rescued. After making his report he was stationed with the cruiser for a year till they got into port. During that period the Captain educated him on different aspects of a warship which rounded out his education on the military. The remnants of the scout ship was found and returned to a base for inspection. The evidence from the ship gave Kepler a clean bill of health. During that time on the Cruiser, the Academy had researched his ancestry and found his people lived to be about three thousand years old and were never sick or diseased. With this new information the powers that be assigned him to a self contained fighting ship with an organic brain along with a dozen robot fighters and their ships. He was assigned to a sector and started making his rounds.
CHAPTER 2 A Deep Loss
Life was going well and for eight years life was smooth with only minor problems. Then the call came that turned life upside down. The organic brain, Marna, was like a family member by this time and they worked like a well oiled machine. War had broke our again. The second Rycin war lasted almost twenty years. Three weeks before it ended Kepler was checking out an unknown signal coming from a nearby planet and went to investigate. As he circled the planet three enemy ships came from different directions and opened fire. Though his ship was crippled he managed to destroy two of them, but the third got him and, with the ship breaking up, Marna transported him to the surface of the planet and sent co-ordinates of their location. He watched as his ship with Marna aboard came to an explosive end as it hit the surface. Within twenty four hours several Peacekeeper ships are circling the planet and bring Kepler aboard. He is not in the best of shape and is sent to a medical ship to fix his body as well as his mind. Watching his ship and close friend perish in a mushroom cloud was too much to bear and he needed six months to get his mind healed. Finally Kepler was back to his old self or as close as he ever would be. They took him to the main base and there introduced him to
