    Chapter One - A visitor

I was completely still as I stared ahead. There was no way that who was in front of me was really... him. Herobrine. The one I had been looking for since I got into this game. Still, while the thrill of finding him was very fulfilling, it occurred to me that I had no weapon. My friends were here, also frozen, and I found myself shaking. The villagers were here. We had only had one night of sleep. I had no idea how we were going to do this... fight Herobrine. No weapons. No help. No prep time. There is no way for us to make it up north and talk to the villagers who might know the spell we needed to get the world back to normal and break Sarah’s vision on us.

I had forgotten about Sarah’s vision. I had honestly forgotten. It slipped my mind as I had made my way to the surface. I had forgotten the warning the men had given me as I told them the plan, disregarding the dangers Sarah would throw at us. In my defense, I knew that she was going to throw something at us. That much was clear, obviously. I just didn’t expect... well, I didn’t expect it to be Herobrine.

I tried to talk to him, I did. However, when I opened my mouth to speak, nothing but a squeak came out.

Surprised to see me? Herobrine laughed.

The laugh matched the exact laugh we had all heard when we were brought into this world. It shook me to my core, and I could tell that I wasn’t the only one. Rose, Carter, and Timothy were completely glued to their spots. Tanner and Oliver were at least able to show their distaste on their faces as they glared at Herobrine.

You can’t be real, Oliver shrugged. Herobrine is back in the End. I literally saw you there.

I thought you knew better than that, Oliver, Herobrine laughed. "You know this game is my world. I can do whatever I want."

If that’s true, then why do you have to trade with villagers? Oliver snapped. Even you have to abide by some rules.

Has it ever occurred to you that maybe I was just trying to be nice? Herobrine forced a smile that reached the edge of his eyes. His sinister glare seemed to land on everyone at once.

That’s a funny story, Oliver snickered. You, helping people? Hardy har-har.

Herobrine glared at Oliver. Weren’t you just in the End with me? How did you get to the real world?

Oliver just shrugged. Maybe if you tell me how you got out of the End, I can say whether mine was the same way.

    Herobrine scoffed.

You can’t be mad at me for trying, Oliver smirked.

I had no idea how he was so confident standing there and talking to Herobrine as if they were old friends. It was then that it occurred to me that maybe they were. There was probably a reason that they were so friendly with one another. They had spent time together in the End; they probably knew one another better than I thought. I was able to press my lips together in a thin line and study Herobrine as he grinned a little too wide for my taste, his eyes landing on me.

Little miss Lakely, He clicked his tongue. I thought you would have a little bit more bite to your bark now. After all, didn’t you rally your little troops before you left? You told them that you could fight anything Sarah threw at them, right?

    I narrowed my eyes.

Now, look at all of you. It looks like you’ve seen a ghost.

It’s because we have, Tanner snapped.

He stepped forward, a new eyepatch over his missing eye. His clothes were new and clean, reminding me of what he looked like before we went into those dreaded mines. He looked... well, he looked good. And the anger in his expression seemed reassuring as he kept walking forward. Sure, he kept a safe distance from Herobrine, but the idea was still there. He was glaring at Herobrine as if he was a criminal, which wasn’t far off from the truth.

You’re not real. There’s no way you could have come back from the End.

Then how did Oliver get back, huh? Herobrine had a slightly playful tone to his voice, and I winced. He had a point.

You can’t, Tanner shook his head. Not without your forces, or Sarah. You couldn’t leave her behind.

I could tell Tanner was bluffing. He was trying to catch Herobrine in a lie, which was a good idea. However, everyone here seemed to know that Herobrine had no need for Sarah or his forces. If it was really him standing in front of us now, when we didn’t have good armor and even weapons, then there would be no way that he wouldn’t win. It made sense that he would win here. It was his game, and as much as I wanted to win, I knew better. If he attacked now, I would surely be finding out whatever happened after an in-game death.

Herobrine laughed again, snapping me from my thoughts. "Really? You don’t really believe that I need Sarah or those ‘forces,’ do you? You think I’m that wounded? That weak?"

Tanner took a few defeated steps back. He was obviously trying to come up with something to say, some kind of retort. As he fished for one, I heard one of the voices speak up that I did not want to hear speaking up.

    What do you want, Herobrine?

Rose’s tiny voice piped up from the crowd. My eyes widened, and Carter tensed. Timothy suddenly snapped from his own trance, and he shook his head, turning to Rose with a confused look on his face.

Would you look at that! Herobrine cackled. The mouse speaks!

I tensed. Carter’s eyes widened, and his lips were pressed into a thin line.

I wasn’t comfortable with Herobrine’s attention being on Rose. I wasn’t sure why, either, since Rose could obviously defend herself. Not only did she know how to play the game as well as me, but I could almost feel her powers putting the people in the village at ease. She wasn’t some kind of mouse like Herobrine said, a creature incapable of defending itself, and yet I couldn’t stop feeling like I would need to jump in front of a bullet for her soon.

What do I want? Herobrine mocked Rose. What do I want? Is that what you want to know?

Rose lifted her square chin in the air with narrowed eyes. That’s why I asked the question, right? I want to know.

Herobrine smiled wide. Wow. I really didn’t think that you had that much fire in you, Rose.

Many people don’t, but that’s not what we want to talk about right now, is it? Rose tilted her head at Herobrine.

She took a few steps forward, looming toward Herobrine as if she was some kind of terrifying monster. Her head was tilted as she studied him, and I could see that she was trying to do something. She reminded me of a snake charmer trying to charm Herobrine into doing something that she wanted.
