    Chapter One - The Ransom

I heard Rose gasp behind me at the sight of the fallen villager. The donkey I had stolen reared up, crying out in fear despite my calming words. Carter looked pale, and Timothy inhaled sharply through his teeth as the villagers began to panic.

Someone get a doctor! One of the villagers cried, rushing to his aid.

As the other villagers surrounded the fallen soldier to help him, I gently brushed the side of the scared donkey trying tox calm her down.

Shhh shh shh, I whispered. Good girl. It’s okay.

Tanner went to the Illager post without us!? Rose whispered, sounding horrified.

I whirled around to face the soldiers standing side by side, near the blacksmith. The idea that Tanner would leave us after we agreed that the first step in adapting to our Minecraft lives would be moving our base felt like a slap in the face. I mean, we had literally just survived a huge attack on the village and barely got out with our lives. To abandon us and ignore our decisions now, after all we’d been through!?

    I was utterly furious.

You knew about this and didn’t stop him!? I growled.

We tried to! One of the soldiers cried. He wouldn’t listen!

Why did the soldiers even go with him!? I demanded.

We don’t know! The other soldier cried. We tried to stop him, but—

    Who’s we? I snapped again.

Most of us, The soldier to the left of me shook his head slowly. We told him it wasn’t smart, but he didn’t care. He wanted to go, so a number of us went to protect him.

You tried to stop him and failed, I glared at them. And now look at what we have to do.

Lakely, it’s not their fault. Rose shook her head at me. Don’t be so hard on them.

I wasn’t trying to be, but I just couldn’t help it. I was too mad. I couldn’t believe that Tanner had betrayed us like that. I thought back to the journals from his rooms, wondering now if I should have read from them after all. He obviously didn’t trust us enough with his plans, so why should I trust him?

We have to go after him, Carter barked. We can’t just leave him there.

Leaving was his choice, not ours, I growled. We have to protect these villagers. We have plans to fix that giant hole in the earth, remember? That was the whole point!

And we’re supposed to move today, Rose whispered.

Yes, but these events can be postponed, Timothy went to push his glasses up yet again, only to find that they still weren’t there. Tanner’s safety should be our number one priority.

Yes, but he put himself in danger, I argued. How is that our fault? We told him to wait. He didn’t listen.

Carter frowned at me. Are you willing to let him die over that? Besides, it’s not just him. They probably have the rest of the men captured there.

Well, what can we do? I rubbed my temple. We can’t just leave the village defenseless while we’re off hunting Ilagers because of Tanner’s reckless decision.

Well, we can’t just let them die! Rose cried. We have to do something. We’re the heroes of this game!

Wait… Timothy shook his head. He said they had Tanner, not that they killed him. Why do you think they’re keeping him?

We all sat there for a moment, wondering. Finally, I said what we were all thinking but didn’t want to say.

    Sarah.

Rose shook her head. No, Tanner said she was in the End with Herobrine. There’s no way it’s her.

Maybe it’s one of her followers?

Followers? Timothy raised his eyebrows. When did she get followers?

I don’t know, I just thought... well, who knows, I shook my head. I assumed that she would have the same power as Herobrine.

If she had the same power as Herobrine he would have destroyed her, simple as that, Timothy shook his head. No one can be as powerful as him. That’s the only way for any of this to make sense.

Well, what if some villagers were trying to negotiate with her and decided to follow her instead of Herobrine? Or both?

Both could have been possible, I admitted. But that still just seems so... out of character for Herobrine. I mean, he’s... well, he’s him.

Rose rubbed her temples. Okay, look. I get it. Tanner shouldn’t have done what he did, but he did. It doesn’t matter who was right and who was wrong in this scenario. He’s our friend, and we have to save him. Plain and simple.

I sighed. I know... I just, I don’t like it. We need to be safe. If we mess this up, we’re screwed.

If we lose Tanner, we’re screwed. Timothy shook his head.

I nodded. I didn’t like this, at all, but Rose was right. We had to go after Tanner. We couldn’t risk losing him, not after everything that happened recently.

Okay, gather the villagers. We need to devise a plan.

    ---------------

The villagers surrounded us as we stood on the bell, as Rose did on the day of our arrival. They watched us with wide, expectant eyes as we prepared to tell them what I was sure they did not want to hear.

Guys, listen. Tanner has gone after the Illagers who raided us, and he has been captured. He took with him a small fleet of soldiers sworn to protect him, and we’re going after them. Just us four. The rest of you will have jobs to do.

I looked at the faces around us as Timothy explained the situation. A murmuring swam through the crowd. Women held their children tighter; the children began to suckle at their thumbs. The fear was evident in their eyes. I absentmindedly tugged on my leather armor and tried not to look as upset as I felt.

Two soldiers and the blacksmith will stand guard during the night. Timothy will construct two more iron golems as well to aid in the protection of our village through the night while we are traveling. We do not know when we will return, Rose took over for a stage frightened Timothy.

How will we know if you’re coming back? A woman cried out from below.

We will, I assured her. I smiled as wide as I could. We will return. It is our job to return. We will not let these Illagers take us as well as Tanner, we promise.

So, don’t send a search party if you don’t return? The blacksmith asked, raising his hand.

I violently shook my head. No! Absolutely not! Please, just go about the duties we ask of you if you choose to while we are gone. If not, you may go about your daily lives. It will be as if we were never here!

What are you asking of us?

Now, it was Timothy’s turn to step forward. He cleared his throat again and spread his arms out.

"We still need to move our permanent residence here. I would like to enlist the help of constructors to make our home and rebuild the hole beneath it. We simply need movers, constructors, lifters, and the like. This job would be going on while we are recovering Tanner, and I would provide the blueprints.
