    Chapter One - The Chase

I’m sorry, what!? I screamed. How does someone just...disappear!? Wasn’t he in the cage!? Trapped and unable to move!? Or at least, that’s how they usually are, right!?

We need to find him before he gets too far, Tanner nodded.

No way, I snapped. Really? I hadn’t thought of that.

There’s no need to be sassy, Tanner glared at me, then looked back toward the direction that the villagers had run from.

We need to figure out a plan of action. It’s nighttime, so he wouldn’t burn up in the sun. If we don’t find him before then, we’ll lose him for good.

Rose sighed and pressed her hands to her cheeks. Oh, my goodness, She whined. What are we going to do!?

I’ll search the perimeter and see if I can find him, Oliver offered.

Good, I nodded. Tanner, can you see him?

Tanner shook his head. I’m not connected to him in any way, so there’s no way that I would be able to find him. I have no idea where he is or what he’s doing… I’m so sorry, guys.

Well, he couldn’t have gone too far, right? I mean, he’s just a zombie, Carter shrugged. How long has he been missing?

It’s too hard to tell, one of the panting villagers had calmed down enough to say. Way too hard to tell… and too soon.

I nodded. He’s right. We have no idea when he left or which direction he went.

Wait, Sarah suddenly offered. Wouldn’t there be footprints in the snow? We could at least see the direction that he was going in from the footprints.

I hadn’t thought of that, but I had to admit it was a brilliant idea. Of course, we could see where they were going from the footprints in the snow! We could take away from the ones we knew belonged to the running villagers and go from there!

    That’s a brilliant idea, I smiled. I can’t believe I didn’t think of that.

Sarah’s cheeks flooded red as she smiled.

Oliver, fly ahead. Look for footprints and come back to get us immediately! Do you understand!?

Oliver nodded before flying overhead. He took off like Superman, leaving a gust of wind so loud that we were all pushed back in his wake. We smiled as we watched him fly away, looking like a shooting star as he darted across the sky.

I wondered what he would find. My brain was racing with endless possibilities. After all, zombies in cages didn’t just disappear. There was no way that he was there and then just...gone. There was also no way that he would have been able to do this all on his own with no help. Absolutely not. He had to have someone help set him free, which left the question of who and why. Helping the zombie escape would not only be stupid to do, but it would also be detrimental to the health of whoever was helping him get out...surely.

Did you see anything when you were there? I demanded of the villagers. Was anyone leaving or running away?

    The villagers shook their heads.

Better yet, what were you doing there? Tanner asked. Do you guys have rounds or something?

The villager’s mouths opened and closed repeatedly as they tried to figure out something to say. That wasn’t surprising, considering how scary Tanner was. Now, his eyes were bloodshot from crying, and his jaw was set in a determined fashion. It wasn’t a surprise to me, or probably anyone that the villagers were having an issue getting their words out.

Yes, we do rounds, The older librarian chimed in from behind. I can vouch for him. We always do rounds to check on the zombie and feed him and care for him.

Okay, not to sound like a character from Scooby-Doo or anything, but that’s a time frame! I grinned. Think about it. We know that these villagers must have been making the start of their rounds before going to see the zombie, so we have to know that he was gone at the beginning of their shift.

Tanner nodded. Yes, that’s right. Is there any way we could talk to whoever saw the zombie first? We need to know if he was already there or not when you guys arrived. That way, we could tell when he was there or not!

I felt like we were solving some kind of puzzle book to discover who the murderer was. It was fun, thrilling, and it felt like I was doing it with friends. Since getting pulled into this game, I felt like I was doing something enjoyable for the first time.

I don’t get why it’s a big deal anyway, Taylor demanded from behind. It’s literally a librarian zombie. Why are we going through so much trouble to find and cure him?

I would want to give you an answer, of course, The older librarian snarked, But shouldn’t it be enough that he’s one of us and he’s gone missing? Shouldn’t it be enough that he needs our help?

But we’re wasting so many resources to save him! Taylor cried. I mean, it’s not like we have a lot of people to go after him right now!

I glared at Taylor, trying to talk to her with my eyes. I didn’t think it was working, since she kept talking despite everything.

No one should be left behind, I know, but come on! I mean, jeez! It’s just one guy! Is it really worth all of the trouble!?

There was a silence, and Taylor suddenly realized that she had messed up. She looked to me for help, but she was all on her own for this one.

What if one of us were missing? Oneof her soldiers demanded, pointing at themselves. Would you abandon us then!?

Of course not, Taylor cried. I would never-

You’re not being a good leader, one of the soldiers whispered.

Taylor looked horrified. She kept trying to look at me for help, but I left her out to dry, and I wasn’t the least bit ashamed. Becoming a good leader was hard enough as it was; she wasn’t going to get my help doing it. If she couldn’t figure it out herself, then she wasn’t going to last long as a leader. She was going to have to pull herself up out of this.

I’m sorry, was all Taylor said. I am truly sorry for what I said. I shouldn’t have said that. We should be putting all of our resources and energy into finding these people, no matter who they are, especially since we’re stretched so thin as it already is with our people. It’ll be impossible not to look for one of our own. I’m really sorry, I am. I’m just stressed. Please understand that.

The soldiers looked at one another and then back to Taylor. Their eyebrows were knitted together as they tried to figure out what to say or do. Finally, I looked at Taylor and forced a smile onmy face. If her soldiers didn’t forgive her, at least she would be comfortable in the knowledge that I knew what she was going through.

Well, we can’t have a leader who folds under stress, The main soldier barked. He was the one who commented about Taylor first. "I wouldn’t be folding under
