    Chapter One - What Now?

Tanner was panting hard. I could tell he was just as terrified as I was, but neither of us really had any idea what to do. Really, what was there to do? Drop down and get eaten by zombies? It’s not as if I could climb up with my one arm to reach where I needed to reach. In all honesty, we were extremely, one hundred percent screwed. I had no idea what to do. We were going to die here, and there was no way to do anything about it.

Lakely! Tanner cried. Lakely, don’t let go!

I wasn’t planning on it! I screamed in anguish.

The more I held onto the rope, the more I began to slip. My arm was sweating, and the sweat was dripping into my eyeballs. I couldn’t hold on for much longer. The idea of dropping Tanner crossed my mind for a moment. I could drop him and climb to safety myself, that would allow me time to safely get down and help him, but the chances of his survival were very slim if I dropped him. The fall damage alone would kill him, and the zombies would simply finish whatever was left of him. More importantly, if I let Tanner fall and die, then we would be screwed. We wouldn’t be able to fight Herobrine with just the four of us. We needed our Seer, and if I let him die, we would be stuck here. Forever.

Would that really be so bad?

I wanted to mentally slap myself. This was not the time to unpack that kind of thought. At the end of the day, I needed to focus on getting out of here alive, which meant Tanner was coming with me.

What are we going to do? Tanner cried. We’re so stuck!

    It’s your fault, I coughed.

I was slipping fast. At this point, I knew I had about five more seconds of grip. It was all I could do to warn Tanner before we dropped.

    I’m slipping! I cried.

    Brace yourself, Tanner warned me.

Finally, I let go. For a moment, it was freeing to let go of the string. My arm and my hand were able to breathe, and the free-falling sensation was somewhat relaxing. To my surprise, Tanner moved to wrap me in his arms. For a small moment, I almost feared that he was going to spin me around and let me face the impact. However, it seemed he was going to use his body to shield me. As we plummeted to the ground, I let myself close my eyes for a mere moment and let myself enjoy the sensation of falling. I tried not to think about what it was bringing me closer to.

When we hit the ground, it was sudden. It was so jarring that my whole body shook. It wasn’t near as bad as I imagined due to Tanner’s soft weight underneath me. I could hear him cry out in severe pain, and I cringed from the sounds in my ear. The stone beneath me shifted as the sounds of footsteps drew closer. My hearts above my head dangled at half of a set, which was much more than I expected. I didn’t even want to look at Tanner’s hearts. I could hear the zombies shuffling towards us, and I knew we had a few more moments before they closed in. I forced myself to sit up fast, knowing that if I didn’t, we would surely die. The pain was excruciating. I imagined that if it were in real life, my ribs would have been broken. Again, I couldn’t think about that now. I quickly shuffled through my inventory line and whipped out a torch. In one hand, I held the torch, and in the other, I held my sword.

The torch illuminated the stuff of nightmares. I could see the zombies crawling toward me with their green, peeling skin. They were groaning and moaning. Their teeth were gnashing against what used to be their jaws. Their arms were raised straight out, and they were coming toward Tanner and I as fast as they could. I couldn’t think of anything else to do at this point besides what I was about to do.

I swung my sword as hard as I could. I screamed loudly, trying to be scary. I remembered that bears were afraid of people who acted bigger than them, which was true for other predators. I just swung my sword and screamed as the torch illuminated the small space in front of us. I cried and screamed and let every emotion trapped in me out in that moment. For a small moment, the zombies slowed. In their dead, soulless eyes, I could tell that they were feeling whatever feeling was close to shock for them. They stopped for a moment, but a moment was all I needed.

I swung blindly at the nearest zombie. Its head slid off my sword and hit the ground with a loud thud. The body fell back after that, collapsing in a heap on the ground. I swung again and again, and zombies were falling left and right. For a moment, I felt hopeful. Maybe we could survive this after all. If I just kept swinging, and swinging, and swinging, maybe Tanner and I would have a chance. I was going to say something to Tanner, maybe shout in joy, but then it occurred to me.

    Tanner hadn’t gotten up yet.

I froze in fear for a moment. I was too close for the zombies to have already reached him, so I knew it wasn’t that. The fall must have injured him more than I thought possible. For a mere moment, I realized that maybe, just maybe, Tanner could be…

    No. No, God, please.

Finally, I forced myself to look at Tanner’s hearts. When I saw the half of one single, remaining heart, I almost fell to my knees. He had nearly just died for me without a second thought, and my last words to him would have been, it’s your fault. While yes, sure, that was true, it didn’t negate the fact that I regretted saying that the moment it came out of my mouth. I had to think of something, and fast. If not, the zombies were going to kill him with one swing.

I continued swinging my sword around as fast and as hard as I could. My arm, which was still aching from holding us up on the string, didn’t take kindly to my sudden movement with the heavy sword. I didn’t care. I kept swinging as fast and as hard as I could, knocking heads off the zombies with each swing. My torch would illuminate only a fraction of the space every now and again, only allowing me to see some of the zombies' faces. It really looked like part of a horror movie that had gotten cut out. At this point, I was just swinging at shadows.

There was no way I could keep this up forever. Absolutely no way. I had no strength, Tanner was dying, and the zombies were just coming in waves. I assumed there was a spawner of sorts nearby, and when I found it, I would take great pleasure
