    Chapter One - Repercussions

I stared at Carter in complete shock. I was utterly, and horrifyingly, terrified. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. Were we seriously dealing with mutiny? After all, we had done!?

Oh, my Notch, Carter! I cried, rushing to him.

He fell to the ground, coughing. I knew he would be okay. He had to be. We couldn’t lose someone to a mutiny of all things. Not now. Please, Notch…

What did you go and do that for!? Charlie wailed. You stabbed Carter!

To my surprise, James actually dropped the sword he had used to attack Carter in shock. He stumbled back, looking around and seeming afraid. He looked up at me, seemingly heartbroken from the realization of what he had just done. He stumbled back a few steps.

    I... I didn’t mean….

What? Were you trying to hug him with that sword!? I snapped. Seriously, James, what were you thinking!?

    James shook his head. I’m sorry...I’m so sorry...I didn’t...I-

It doesn’t matter what you meant to do, Tanner snarled. It matters what you did and what we need to do about it now. We need to help him.

How!? No one’s actually ever been stabbed in a Minecraft game! I cried. What are we supposed to do? It’s not like we have bandages or first aid or anything! We have food, but Tanner and I are already running so low we just can’t-

We brought food, Charlie offered Carter some steak. Here, see how well this helps. Please.

Carter took the steak. His breathing was uneven, and he couldn’t sit straight. He didn’t meet anyone’s gaze as he ate the steak. To my relief, the wound was closing and healing, but it was healing realistically slow to my horror. My eyes widened, and I looked at Tanner.

The Magic is wearing off, He whispered. Oh no.

What can we do? I pressed.

We’ll figure that out later, Tanner shook his head. We’ll have to work with what we have now. At least he’s healing.

Not fast, Charlie shook his head.

That’s better than nothing, I snapped, afraid that if anyone said anything bad about this situation that it would somehow get worse. I knew that this didn’t make any sense, but still.

I can breathe better, Carter smiled at me. That’s good.

Yes, that is very good, I admitted. It’s something.

"But not the something you wanted, hm?"

Well, what I wanted was for you to heal faster, and none of what is actually true to be true, but we can’t always have what we want now, can we? I frowned.

    Apparently not, I whispered.

James, Tanner demanded. What do you have to say for yourself?

    I was angry, James cried.

That’s not an excuse for what you did! I demanded. We can’t have people within our ranks hating each other the way you apparently hate us. What did we ever do to you, James!? Huh!? We only came here to save you from everything that’s ever happened so far in this game. What did we do to you!? Tell me!

James didn’t say anything. He stared at the ground. I swore I could see a small tear rolling down his cheek. He trembled a little bit, and I was becoming afraid that he was going to pass out. Finally, he shook his head.

You’re right. I was jealous. I was so jealous that you could do something I couldn’t. That you could protect us from Herobrine. It’s my job to protect the village, and then you guys showed up here and ruined that for me!

So, you got so angry that you stabbed Carter!? I demanded.

He looked like he was going to attack me first! James wailed.

But he didn’t! I snapped. He was putting you down because I told him to! And he wouldn’t even have picked you up in the first place if you hadn’t pushed him to that level!

    I... I-

I understand the feeling of being helpless, James, but you can’t continue to take your feelings out on us. That’s not right, not fair, and frankly, not safe. `

Well, we’re all aware of the non-safe part of this, Carter laughed.

Carter, be quiet. You were stabbed because someone was jealous of you. If anything, you should be a little angrier at James for what he did. I would.

I understand, but let’s think about this from James’ perspective, Carter laughed. If it was from his point of view, and your job was ripped out from underneath you, wouldn’t you be a little jealous? I mean, think about it. What if another girl jumped over from another world and was just as great a fighter too? Much better than you ever were?

    Well, that’s impossible, I laughed.

Carter shot me a glance. Seriously, Lake. Be honest. Let’s be serious for a second. Try to be better than our enemies, remember?

I’m the enemy now? James whispered.

Well, you did just stab me, Carter glared.

    True, James whispered.

Well...when you put it that way...I guess you’re right. If someone did come to take my job from me in this world, I would be really upset. But I wouldn’t stab anyone.

You say that now, but let’s be honest, Lake, He grinned. Are you really the epitome of good decision-making?

I frowned. What was that supposed to mean!?

    I’m kidding, Lake, Carter snickered.

    Still, not funny, I pouted.

    Carter laughed.

Slowly, he stood up. The men who supported James before the stabbing watched Carter with wide, worried eyes. It was apparent that they had no idea how to react to Carter’s looming size and obvious gentle giant quality. I found it weird that Carter would jump from super mean to calm within minutes, especially after being stabbed, but I guessed that steak could change the mood of even the angriest bear. I smiled to myself.

    Glad you’re feeling better, C.

    He chuckled. Oh, I know.

So, does anyone else have a problem with us? I asked as Carter stumbled around, getting used to walking again.

Speak now or forever hold your peace.

What if we have a problem but don’t want to actually stab anyone? Someone from the back asked.

Or we don’t want to get stabbed? Another voice chimed in.

I had to fight a laugh. Carter also smiled, but Tanner’s expression didn’t change. I wondered if he was trying to figure out if telling people the truth was a good idea or not. He seemed to be a little on edge, which was, of course, understandable. I watched him closely from the corner of my eye.

No one is going to stab anyone anymore, I finally offered. Right, James?

James nodded so enthusiastically I was afraid his head might pop off on accident.

Okay then, I turned to the men who had followed James. Please, tell me what you guys have issues with. We will discuss them as civil people.

Okay, They agreed. I looked at Tanner, expecting him to also step up. This was his situation, after all. However, he wasn’t moving.

Tanner, I hissed. Get over here.

Tanner stepped forward slowly. After that, he didn’t move again.

I just… One of the voices in the back began to talk. "I’m just afraid that I’m going to be used for whatever you have to do for power? I don’t know what that is, and it makes
