Looking At Self-Care through the Lens of a Young Lady
Hi there,
Did you know that you—yes, you—could literally change not just your
world but the
world for the better, simply by taking care of yourself? Self-care is undoubtedly one of the most overly discussed topics of the 21st century; even more so when it comes to women, and for good reason. Women today wear many different hats—the most important of them being those of nurturers and mentors of future generations, both in the home environment as well as in society. When we step out into the world whilst working on becoming our best possible versions, we find that it is not unusual for us to have major breakthroughs, brainwaves, our productivity at an all-time high, or finding cures to problems big and small that have been plaguing our homes and society for decades. Heavy, right? I’m sure you know that everything you do and say, every decision you make—whether inconsequential in your eyes or the opposite—creates a ripple effect, impacts everyone around you, and consequently, mankind. I didn’t make that better, did I? But don’t panic. This is great news. Women can soar to great heights once we get going with self-care, because then and only then can we embrace life with the correct frame of mind and a body prepared for any challenge.
First things first, let me put this out there. There is no mind without the body and no body without the mind. Mind-blowing stuff, right? I know. But in all seriousness, let that really sink in— the mind and body are the two most important parts of our existence. Why shouldn’t we take the best care of our reasons for existence? Why shouldn’t we consistently nourish them with water? Why shouldn’t we exercise them every day? Why shouldn’t we let them rest for 7–8 hours every night and maybe even 30 minutes in the afternoon without interruption? Why shouldn’t we surround them with other quality minds and bodies? Deep down, we know the answer to all these questions. We take our precious minds and bodies for granted. It’s nobody’s fault. It’s part of the human experience. Life happens to all of us.
Before even attempting to self-care, we have to be self-aware. Picking up this book in the first place is a sign that you are on the right track. In fact, learning about self-care is self-care in itself. To be self-aware, we have to be able to sit with ourselves from time to time and just do what calls us. Allow your children to relax. Allow yourself to relax. Get acquainted with yourself. You don’t need to be on the move every single minute of every single day, unless, of course, you’re doing something you enjoy. It’s during these in-between
times or pauses
, if you will, that we harvest our growth.
Remember, self-care is serious business. It’s way deeper than just giving your nails a shiny coat of paint or treating yourself to a spa session on the weekend. It’s spiritual. It’s a way of life. Do it modestly, do it privately. In the age of social networking, we all have an open window to our personal lives but, honey, we have got to control the shade.
The secret to seeing change is consistency. We may have the best strategies or techniques but if we do not apply them practically and are not consistent with them, we will never know what or how much we can truly achieve. So, get your basics in place. Clean your room first! This is self-care. Your living quarters, more often than not, show your current state of mind. Reflecting is self-care whilst overthinking isn’t. What’s the difference between the two? It’s simple. Doing one leaves you with a feeling of peace and the other leaves you overwhelmed and anxious.
Your body was made for movement, so do what feels natural. Balance is key when it comes to exercise and life, really. Total body fitness can do wonders for your state of mind. Walk, walk, walk, walk. Remember, your legs carry you through life. You’d better love your legs.
Tough love IS self-care. Every time we choose to not enable unhealthy behaviour, we are doing our peers, and future generations of women a tremendous favour; not to mention those who came before—and who will thank us wholeheartedly from the other side. Be blunt but kind. Be brave enough to break the same old cycles which are being perpetuated. Doing the same things over and over again and expecting different results is the definition of insanity.
Once we start to make this internal shift, our outside reality changes drastically. The way we look at the world changes. We grow a thicker skin. We no longer crave validation. Trips to doctors lessen. Things don’t happen TO you; they happen FOR you. When your mind is clearer, your gut gets louder. You are naturally drawn to people or things that serve your purpose. You make the right decisions. You call in opportunities to make more money. Your relationships become more fulfilling as you become a more attractive person both inside and out.
Look, self-care, at its core, is unselfish. In time, you come to understand that this is about more than just you. You are doing this not only for those who came before but also for the generations to come. Denying the world of your gifts is a sin. But know that these creative juices only flow in the right way when you are in tune with yourself and work on your strengths and weaknesses.
Now’s the time to get our act together, start applying what we’ve just been hearing over and over again for so long, and finally make a difference in our homes and beyond. Call this a love letter to all women, call it a wake-up call, call it what you want. The world depends on you! It is your ethical responsibility to be successful! Remember, women are the foundation of the world and where women go, the culture goes. So, come home to yourself. It’s never too late to start. You’ll see.
Onward and upward,
