influences of this world … You realize you are pure Spirit.

    Search for Spirit

Spirituality is a subject we are hearing more and more of in today’s time of stress, turmoil, and increasing pressure. It is the desire for a deeper meaning in our lives. This then allows us to attain balance in our material lives. What is this search for spirit? Is it something that is worth pursuing, or is it elusive and therefore not a goal worth striving for? I believe it is the core of happiness. In our daily lives, we get used to a certain level of comfort. When that level increases, we begin to expect even more. This can be compared to children asking for more toys despite having a room full of toys that they never play with.

We become like hamsters on a wheel, running round and round, feeling like we are getting nowhere in life. Does this have a ring of familiarity for you? That is the path of material wealth. It begins to consume you, and it takes away your peace of mind. Is there an alternative? I truly believe there is. The path lies in finding a balance between one’s material and spiritual lives. It is like making an investment and watching it grow. When you invest in a stock or a mutual fund, it yields dividends over a certain period. Similarly, you have to invest in your spirit, and the investment you get back is tremendous. You will get back peace of mind, a true purpose in life, and tremendous joy. You will begin to love your life. The world around you becomes truly miraculous. Now you can see your place in it and the places of others. Spiritual wealth is altogether different; it does not have the same dynamics that material wealth produces. These words spiritual and spirituality—what do I mean by them? They mean different things to different people. Some people connect spirituality with yoga, others with meditation. The method is not important; what matters is that we realize that we are more than just our bodies. Each person has a physical body and a spiritual essence that is one’s soul. Some people call that one’s spirit.

Many people are beginning to realize we are here for a purpose. They are searching to give their lives more depth and meaning. We need to start by realizing that we are spiritual beings first! What do I mean by that? We are souls with bodies. Our bodies will die when we do, but our souls are eternal. They go on living even after our bodies have been buried, cremated, and so on. This is true for each and every one of us!

I believe there is a spiritual realm to which we all return. This place is our true home. Should that not make us reexamine our priorities in life and perhaps make some different choices? Many people are beginning to make that shift in consciousness. They are starting to realize that material wealth can have a place in their lives; however, spiritual wealth brings rewards material goods never can.

    Balance between Material and Spiritual

Am I saying one should shun material wealth? Not at all! What I am saying is that it is very important to find a balance between your material and spiritual lives. There is nothing wrong with living in a beautiful house and driving a nice car. However, recognize them for what they are—just material things. You entered this world with nothing on, and you will leave this world the same way. On a spiritual path, it becomes important to nurture your spirit. This is that part of you that is all-knowing, wise, loving, and above all, infinitely peaceful. How does one do that? We will get to that.

The search for spirit is a path traveled alone. Here is an important distinction between the material and the spiritual. In the material world, you can make the choice to have a lot of company. You can also make the choice to travel your path alone. The spiritual path is a private relationship between you and the Supreme Being. Everyone is on their own path, and each individual comes to different crossroads. This happens at various times in a person’s life. During that time, it is important to recognize things always happen for your spiritual growth. The universe is extremely wise, loving, and patient. She provides her lessons with care. She only requires you, the student, to learn your lesson and move on. As you learn each lesson, your soul evolves, higher and higher, like a beautiful butterfly. The universe in her infinite wisdom only puts on your plate what you can handle, never more. She also sends help your way; it is always there. You only have to open your heart and ask for it. What is the universe? It can be defined as the world around us, including nature and everything contained within it. The universe as we know it was created by God. That is why I consider the universe to be our kind, wise, and loving teacher. The universe presents us with many learning opportunities when the time is right. God cannot be contained within the universe, for he exists everywhere within the universe and outside it as well. I will sometimes define God as she or he, but that is only for our convenience, for God does not really fit into any of our neat little categories. I believe God exists everywhere, all the time, infinitely. He is beyond the boundaries of space and time. Definitions have their limitations in the material realm. For this reason, the word universe is one I will be using freely. Sometimes it will be more appropriate to use God and at other times universe.

God is also one of many different names to various individuals. Some think of God as Jesus, others as Allah, yet others are more comfortable with divine wisdom. The name is not important; what really matters is that you acknowledge that there is a superior being responsible for running our cosmos or our universe. What then is the connection between universe and soul? I believe all souls—that is, each and every one of us—are connected to the universe. That is where we came from, and that is where we shall all return. It is like an ocean and many small streams; God is that ocean, and we are the streams.

Why is the spiritual journey taken alone? Well, sometimes you will be a teacher to someone you meet. At other times, the roles will be reversed. The teacher will then become the student! You will also notice the path of spirit is not always easy; it is, however, very fulfilling. You walk this path alone because everybody is at a different level, and that is OK. You know the saying You can take a horse to the trough, but you cannot make him drink? Similarly, when someone does not speak your language, trying to convince them will fall on deaf ears. Trying to convince others of your beliefs will earn you a blank stare. This is because they may not be at the same spiritual level as you are! It is best to realize each of us is unique, and like a beautiful rose, we will bloom when the time is right for us.

There is a spiritual dawning among all of us right now! The dawning is the realization that there is much more to life than the accumulation of material goods. It does not necessarily bring us the happiness we all crave in life. There is a certain amount of satisfaction in living in a beautiful home, wearing nice clothes, driving expensive cars, and so on. However, once you have acquired these possessions in your life, do you not ask yourself, Is there not more to my life? Just striving for mere materialism starts to wear thin after a while. Your life becomes an empty shell devoid of meaning.

Do we have to travel far and wide to acquire this wisdom we all crave? Is it not ironic that this wealth is right here in our own backyard, so to speak? The backyard I am referring to is our souls! Our souls contain within them all the answers we yearn for. All it requires of us is to take the time to be silent and to go within. The practice I am referring to is that of meditation. That is one of the ways we can acquire spiritual wealth and move ourselves to a higher level of vibrational frequency. Another way to acquire spiritual wealth, abundance, and peace of mind is by the choices we make on a daily basis.

    40608.png

    Spiritual Wealth and Peace

People who are spiritually wealthy exude a sense of peace because they are at a different level of vibrational frequency.

How does one become more peaceful? By making choices that will bring more peace into your life. One of the best ways to do that is to include meditation in your daily routine. It should be as automatic as brushing your teeth. When I don’t meditate, I really notice the difference in myself. I am crankier, and things do not flow for me peacefully. Everything seems to be an effort. The best time is early morning before everyone else is up and about. However, that is not cast in stone. One can decide what works best for oneself according to one’s schedule. Ideally, early in the morning and late at night before going to sleep can work for most of us. It will make a huge difference in your life. At first, your mind will be full of noise and chatter. Give it time, be patient, and soon you will be able to reach the silence within. Try to concentrate on your breath; there is a treasure waiting to be discovered! It is right there. We do not have to journey anywhere to find this treasure that we all yearn for so desperately.

Meditation is something I look forward to every day. It is like a cleansing ritual for my soul, and I do not feel complete without it. If I were to start my day without a shower, I would feel very tired, cranky, and out of sorts. A shower wakes me up and helps me feel refreshed. Meditation does the same for my soul. Its benefits are not something that can be described on the material plane. Nor can they be discussed once you start reaping the benefits of meditation. They are for you alone. Why is that? Once you start discussing it, you bring it into the material realm, where it is now open to others’ perceptions. Everyone has a different perception, which is fair. That is how the world operates. Perceptions can be both negative and positive. You also have to realize that every person’s perception becomes their reality. It does not have to be your reality, but it certainly is theirs. If you run into negativity, this can be discouraging. If you find yourself defending your point of view, you may set yourself back spiritually. That of course is not your intent. That is why you may want to give some serious consideration before opening that door. Negative energy is a roadblock toward attaining peace.

    Taking Care of Your Body

Meditation implies taking care of your soul. That is very important. Just as important as taking care of your body. This is the temple of your soul. You need to nourish it with nutritious foods, plenty of water to drink, and regular exercise. There are so many good books out there on nutrition that I do not feel the need to elaborate on this topic. As far as exercise, even a daily walk is so therapeutic. Once that becomes a habit, there will be no turning back for most people.

Many people do not feel they have the time to exercise. This again is a choice; it is all about priorities in life! If health is an important priority, then exercise becomes an important choice for you. Many people do not exercise, eat the wrong foods, hardly drink any water, and then wonder why they get ill. If you did not look after your vehicle, do you expect it would run efficiently for you? Similarly, your body deserves the same respect.

    40612.png

    No Coincidences in Life

Life is busy, and everything happens for a reason; there are no coincidences in our lives. When we meet someone who really aggravates us, stop and think for a moment. Why is this person in my life?

What am I supposed to learn from this situation? Often this person we find so annoying is here to teach us a very important life lesson.

The difficult thing about people who irritate us is they often point out a flaw in our own personality. This is not only hard to see but even harder to admit to ourselves.

    40614.png

    Learning Experiences

The people who appear in your life only come when you, the student, are ready. It is best to learn your lessons and then move on. When you fail to learn, the same problem will reappear until your lesson is complete. Let me give you an example. You and another individual in your family do not get along. She really gets on your nerves. Everything has to be done on her terms or she has a tantrum. She is in your life to teach you about tolerance and patience. When you are more tolerant and patient with her, and show her unconditional love, your relationship will change. She may not change as a person. However, a spiritually enlightened person does not expect people to change. Instead, they start to see the world in a different light. They also begin to realize in order for the relationship to change, they themselves have to transform. True change begins when we begin to accept responsibility for failures in our relationships.

There is an important reason you want to learn your lessons quickly. Our issues will get bigger if we do not solve them. Why is that? Often that is the universe’s way of getting our attention. Otherwise, we walk around oblivious on the path of our spiritual awakening.

Today, examine the world around you and everyone in it! Have a look at your parents, spouse, children, and friends. What lessons do you think you have to learn from them? Conversely, what can they learn from you? Remember life is one big school. We are all here to learn our lessons before we return to the spiritual realm. The next time someone does something that upsets you, pause for a minute. Then ask yourself, What am I supposed to be learning from this? Do not just get angry and say something you may regret later.

    40616.png

Asking for Help from Your Guardian Angels

A spiritually enlightened person also knows to seek help when times become difficult. We are never alone; all of us have guardian angels assigned to us from the time we are born.

I remember a particularly difficult time in my life when our son was gravely ill and I was afraid we were going to lose him. My son has always been very spiritual. Shortly after he was born, he would giggle and smile up at the ceiling after I had fed him. I was never afraid when he did this; there was always a sense of peace in the air. I am sure he was communicating with his guardian angels. He stopped this around the age of eighteen
