DEDICATION
I want to thank my daughter and all my friends who have encouraged me and helped me in numerous ways in the writing of this book. As I wrote the many stories of my life, I was made aware of the lessons I have learned along the way. The benefit of time is to be able to look back and see how each choice I made contributed to the person I am today.
I am a perpetual student. The old saying is true, When the student is ready, the teacher appears.
FOREWORD
"Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it. Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumored by many. Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in your religious books. Do not believe anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders. Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations.
But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefits of one and all, then accept and live up to it."
—Hindu Prince Gautama Siddhartha, the founder of Buddhism
Buddha 562-483 BC
PREFACE
I t is said that each of us have a story to tell. I was encouraged to write my story by several friends who have heard parts of it. It is amazing to me when I look back over the years and review the adventures of the past to see how each event opened the door for the next. It is with the choices we make that lessons for our advancement of our spiritual understanding enfolds. It is our job to look at every situation objectively and understand what we have chosen to experience.
We chose this lifetime and the people who are to play in the drama we call life. Some of these people have been with us for many lifetimes, others are with us to play certain parts, and then they leave. It is our job to understand that all of the experiences we have had are part of a greater self-portrait in which we paint in emotions, words, and experiences until the portrait is completed in the Eternal Now. When we are able to acknowledge the God Particle
that is within us, and when we are able to acknowledge it as our true nature, we are another step closer to our final destination.
The path towards self-actualization is filled with opportunities to learn about becoming nonjudgmental, to be able to forgive others as ourselves, and erase past guilt, remorse and anger that lowers our light and physical energy.
In this book, I have shown the way I took to find peace in my life. I will not tell you that I have completed my assignment for this lifetime since I will not know where I am in the portrait of my life until I am in Spirit again. Then I will be able to review my life, and the choices I have made.
My prayer for you, dear Reader, is that you may understand that there are no victims in this life. We choose our path and our lessons to learn, sometimes very difficult ones, but in the end the gain is so much more than the loss. Remember you are never alone in your journey. There are many people around you to help, but most importantly there is your inner spirit, your God Spark
of inner guidance that is always there. You just have to be open to listen and then follow its direction. If there is only one thought you gain from reading this book, I hope it is the realization that each of us form our own lives with the choices we make each day. What we do today prepares the events for tomorrow.
ACKNOWLEDGMENT
I want to thank some very special people in my life that helped me with this project. These people are on my HERO list:
INTRODUCTION
N o one really thinks of themselves as a shadow, although there are many of us. We live and function within society, but we are not considered a part of any group, family, or nation. We do not see ourselves as worthy of hope or happiness in our life. We exist as a shadow by the form of the other
who has the laughing friends and excitement of life’s adventure, and who has the energy, drive, and confidence to make a better future for themselves.
A shadow child is the hurt, inner child who has been abused, unloved, and unrecognized. They are still carried as a part of an adult consciousness. These children are found in all nationalities, male and female. They live their lives in the shadow of mainstream society, blending into their environment so as not to draw attention to themselves. They can be found in every strata of society. Their only struggle for survival, as they see it, is to remain hidden.
Shadow people hold all kinds of jobs, covering their inner emptiness with the outward pretense of being a part of the other.
Their world goes day by day in a grey blur of sameness. They are bored and restless, but have no idea where to look for help. They live for the day when they will not have to worry about just surviving. No matter what anyone might say to them or try to help them in any way, they turn away and dig deeper into their misery. They might have a day or two of happiness, but always find some way to turn it into a disaster. They are people who have given up trying to find something to strive for with a motto: life is what you see and then it is over.
If we learn one thing in this lifetime, it should be that we were born to a better life. Jesus said, I come that you may have life and have it abundantly.
John 10:10. If we can take a step back from the everyday turmoil and listen to our soul, the God within will give us the strength, courage, and the direction to find a better life. If we rely on that inner knowing, then whatever the obstacles ahead, we can face it confidently. To find this inner power, you have to sincerely search for it.
This is my personal story of how my life became meaningful when I heard the voice of Divine Spirit and followed the directions. I have to admit I didn’t have a clue on how to function in the other’s
world, and I still have some trouble with that, but I have learned my strengths and I am now able to walk in confidence and in joy.
Each of us comes to a point in our lives when we have to choose what path of life we will take. The road to the right is narrow, filled with obstacles to overcome and challenges to conquer. The road to the left is wide and smooth with small obstacles in the distance. How tempting is it to continue being a shadow of your true self and ignore the promise of greatness? It is your choice. Which way do you choose?
CHAPTER ONE
A Time to Remember
O ur old VW bus was going slow because of the altitude as we followed the two lane road that wound around the hills covered in grass. There was an occasional small, brown-colored home and a few trees that dotted the landscape. I was struck with the sameness coloring of the countryside, in that it had some green grass, but the same color of brown for the houses. We were climbing up a large hill and suddenly there ahead of us was a massive mountain rising up from the valley floor with one side of sheer rock. There didn’t seem to be a way to ascend the mountain, yet our road was winding toward the massive rock formation right in front of us. High on top of the mountain, close to the edge, we could see that there were buildings of some sort.
As we climbed higher towards the top of the mountain, the scenery changed. There were no brown houses, but there was grass and a large outcropping of rock. Finally, at the top there was a huge wall that extended around a city, and then we saw a small gate in the wall, which our VW bus just barely squeezed through.
We entered the town with cobblestone streets that led up higher toward the main part of town. We had to park the bus and start walking as the streets were way too small for a car of any size. The road was flanked with buildings and shops, filled with all kinds of beautiful things to tempt the tourists. The buildings in the town were colored with the same brown that we saw in the valley.
This was the medieval town of Urbino, Italy. We were weekend visitors from the nearby U.S. military base, where my husband Len, a Master Sergeant in the Air Force, was stationed at the airport in a small town called Remini, a seaside town on the Adriatic Ocean. We learned that Remini was a playground for people from all over Europe during the summer months. Our apartment was four blocks from the seaside that offered miles of white sand to enjoy.
We had found this mountain top city almost by accident. Every weekend we would go exploring the beauty of
