Artemus Breckenridge
AKA Growler
Born September 2, 1920
Turned over an orphanage in October 1934 at the age of 13.
Joined the Navy in 1938. Died in the Yellow Sea October 1944 on the submarine, Escolar.
Why are you a Valhalla Warrior?
Why? Well, I guess I tried to save guys on that sub and Odin thought I was noble or some shit. *smiles* Nah, actually, I love being a warrior. I had six younger brothers and sisters growing up, then lived in a group home for four years. My parents couldn’t afford to take care of us kids during the depression, but even before that we lived in the Midwest. The dust bowl sounds all sporty *chuckles*, but it was hell. We lost everything on the farm. My parents packed up and left.
I was a teen when my parents finally dropped us at an orphanage. I don’t know what happened to my brothers and sisters. We were separated by age then by sex. I think the younger ones got taken in by a family since they were under ten. I was thirteen in 1934 when my parents let us go. By then my voice had changed, I’d shot up to about six feet tall, so I was looked at as an adult. I ended up just hanging out and then joined the Navy when I hit seventeen. The orphanage was glad to not have another mouth to feed, so the Navy welcomed me with open arms.
If you had survived the war, what do you think your life would’ve been like?
I probably would’ve been one of those confirmed bachelors
that everybody has in their family. I love people, too much to just find one to spend my life with. Being Pan, of course they didn’t have that terminology back then, I couldn’t find one person who was like me. I also had a hard time understanding why other people
