Do You Know Your Self(s)? - Clay Dinger
Chapter 1
DO YOU KNOW YOUR SELF(S)?
When considering the numerous definitions of Self,
it becomes apparent that the concept of Self
may seem complex. I have chosen to look at the five (5) Self(s) listed below as a way to help explain how someone can become more AWARE
of what influences their decisions/choices in life.
We each have an Authentic Self, an Intellectual Self, a Physical Self, an Emotional Self, and a Social Self. There are many other Self(s),
but the main focus of this book will be on these five Self(s), Gut Feelings, and the Ego. Gut Feelings are the Authentic Self’s internal Intuition signals that tell you if you are on the correct path or not, much like a vehicle’s Global Positioning System (GPS), but we will go into more about that later.
The purpose of this book is to help you become more AWARE
of your different Self(s)
and how each of them can influence your decisions/choices.
• Authentic Self (Spirit)
(Also called the Higher Mind, Soul, Intuition, or True Self.)
• Intellectual Self (Conscious Mind)
(Where we do our thinking and where the Ego resides.)
• Physical Self (Body)
• Emotional Self (Thoughts)
(Thinking not based on logical reasoning.)
• Social Self (Outside Influence)
(From family, school, church, society, culture, and so forth.)
The Intellectual Self generally gets to make All the decisions/ choices that the other Self(s) have to live with. So, it becomes very important for the Intellectual Self to be AWARE of why it is making decisions/choices before it makes them.
In the case of the Physical Self, it has to live (or die) based on the decisions/choices that the Intellectual Self makes, such as over indulgence of food, tobacco, alcohol, drugs, etc. The Emotional Self and the Social Self can sometimes override (or influence) the Intellectual Self. Even the Physical Self can create cravings that will try to influence the Intellectual Self.
The Intellectual Self, and the other Self(s) listed above, cannot exist without the Physical Self and cannot fully enjoy life without the Physical Self being in good shape. When the Intellectual Self doesn’t make good decisions/choices, the Physical Self and the Emotional Self may suffer.
So why doesn’t the Intellectual Self make better decisions/choices?
We all have many things that influence what we think and do. Most times, we are not even AWARE that we are actually being influenced by the various Self(s) listed above. A lot of our beliefs were ingrained into us during childhood from our parents, family, school, church, society, culture, and so on. Sometimes, we are not even AWARE of the beliefs that we have. And yet, every decision/choice we make is based on a belief, even if we are not AWARE that the belief
