Am I Happy?
Twenty-one years ago I consciously embarked on a journey to find true happiness and today, while I haven’t yet achieved the destination called ultimate happiness
, I can honestly say that I am a happier more content person than I was yesterday. There have been many speed bumps along the way, but even so, this is generally how I have felt about my life for the past twenty-one years. Also know that my feelings of happiness are not a result of looking at myself in the mirror each morning and repeating affirmations over and over, so that I can face the world with a big smile on my face. My definition and experience of happiness is at a much deeper level. My happiness is a profound sense of stability, contentment (peace of mind) and purpose.
We All Want To Be Happy!
Over the years, I have studied anything and everything I have been able to get my hands on to learn how other people, schools of thought and institutions work towards the same end. What I discovered from all my research and experimentation is that there are as many ways to human happiness as there are people on the planet and maybe even a few more. However, as I became less of a self-created happiness guinea pig
and my life took shape in the form that I had always wished that it would, I began to see the similarities in all of us more and more.
It’s obvious that we all want to be happy, have purpose and have an abundance of money (more than we really need), however, what became fascinating for me the more I studied and experimented, is that there are scientifically proven Universal Laws that govern everything from the largest of stars to the smallest of particles and everything in between, including us! As I have already mentioned, these Universal Laws are different to what you believe in
. They don’t care if you are rich or poor, a spiritual person, a religious person or an atheist; they just keep on working and affecting you and your life circumstances regardless. In addition to the Universal Laws, I also learnt that even though our genetics, our outer circumstances and dreams may appear to be very different, the basic composition of human beings is constant from person to person. This is what makes us human beings as opposed to an animal or a plant.
The Blueprint
Given that there are irrefutable Universal Laws governing our lives and that the inner structure of all human beings is constant, then there must also be a model or a formula that can supersede and override any individual circumstances to produce human happiness and fulfillment. In this book I offer you exactly this model.
Theoretical or Real-Life Application?
During the planning of this book, I decided that I would relate some of my own experiences as a way of illustrating some of the principles. I have not done this from a place of narcissism, but because I felt it was important to be able to show you how to apply the knowledge and techniques to real life and its many challenges. I chose to relate some of my own experiences for two reasons; firstly, I am just an ordinary boy from the suburbs, no different to anyone else and secondly, because my path to happiness and fulfillment has been a long bumpy ride. I experienced my first episode of clinical depression just prior to my eighteenth birthday and this abnormality in my physiological makeup continued to manifest frequently over the next twenty-five years.
[Note: It is believed that clinical (biological/major) depression is caused by changes in the levels or activity of certain chemicals within the body – particularly serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine – which are the three main chemicals related to mood and motivation that carry messages within the brain (Source: beyondblue.org.au).]
Over this period I experienced regular bouts of severe lethargy, irritability, mood swings, inability to concentrate, extreme sensitivity to my environment, irritable bowel syndrome, anxiety and panic attacks. These recurring symptoms made my life very difficult for a long time. I often felt as if I was going insane and daily life for me was like walking through quicksand. The symptoms were so unpredictable that at one point I was diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and three years later I was hospitalized with suspected heart problems
; following all the usual cardio stress testing and a catheter procedure (inserting a flexible tube into a blood vessel in my groin and threaded it up into my heart), various neurological tests and psychoanalysis, the diagnosis was nervous exhaustion
, or in old school language what would be called a nervous breakdown. There have been times when I didn’t want to participate in life any more, but somehow I managed to muster the strength to keep going and now thanks to my relentless research, experimentation and practice I have been able to win the insidious prolonged battle with my physiology and I have created unshakeable (almost always) inner peace and contentment.
As I became happier and more content on the inside, I found that my outer circumstances also changed. Five years ago, I was living in the suburbs and I was drowning in a sea of debts. I had no idea how I was going to get myself out of the financial mess that I found myself in, courtesy of a sequence of unfortunate events. Then one particular evening, I had a significant moment of internal change
that I describe in Chapter 9. This was the missing link! This change within me was so powerful, that when it happened, everything in my life (almost instantaneously) aligned exactly how I wanted. Within twelve months, all my debts were completely paid off and for the past four years I have lived in and worked from a $3m beachfront home.
Despite my erratic biology constantly undermining me, I made myself happy
and I am living the life of my dreams using the exact model that I now offer in this book. This means that no matter where you are in your life, you too can create, be or do anything and everything you want using this same model as your basic blueprint.
This book is divided into three parts

In Part I, I explain the Universal Laws that govern your life, provide you with some insight into the world we currently live in, show you who you really are and why your life is exactly the way it is right now. In Part II, I present the blueprint for developing unshakeable happiness and fulfillment; and in Part III, I explain how you can find (or confirm) your true life’s purpose, how you can achieve success in the performance of that role and finally, I show you how you can predict your future.

The Search for Happiness
I just want to be happy!
How many times have you said or heard this? We often say we want to be happy but have you ever stopped to consider what being happy
really means? According to the Oxford English Dictionary, happy
means, feeling or showing pleasure or contentment
. So when you say, I just want to be happy!
you are really saying, I just want to feel pleasure or contentment
. You study at school and college for many years so you can get a good job that pays you well, but how much time and effort have you devoted to your feeling pleasure or contentment? Most of us claim we want to be happy but then we continue to live the same way and wonder why we are still not happy. As you know,
THE DEFINITION OF INSANITY IS DOING THE SAME THING OVER AND OVER AND EXPECTING A DIFFERENT RESULT!
The problem with saying, I just want to be happy!
is the word just
. In this context just
means simply
or merely
. This means what you are really saying is that you would like to be happy, but you are not really prepared to do the work to make it happen. So it remains a pipe dream. To become truly happy (always feeling pleasure and/or contentment) you need determination, laser focus and courage, because not only will you need to change some aspects of your lifestyle, more importantly you will need to change the way you think. Changing habitual thinking is not easy, but if you really want to change your life, there is no other way. If you could be shown how to live feeling pleasure or contentment all the time, would you be prepared to do whatever it takes
to make it happen? Unfortunately for most of us we don’t make this commitment to ourselves until we go through a huge life changing or life-threatening event. I was no different…
Even though I had a history of health issues, I pursued my dream of becoming a professional golfer regardless. Using various techniques I learnt along the way, but mostly by sheer will power, I managed my condition enough to get onto the pro tour.
