INTRODUCTION
In November 2006, I was sitting in the waiting area of my therapist’s office. While waiting, a woman entered and sat down. She appeared to be overly- anxious and exhausted. I am not much of a conversationalist, but since she seemed troubled, I was compelled to say something to her. After getting her attention I asked, Are you alright? She replied, I am exhausted from work and I have a million things to do. The only reason I am here is because of court ordered anger management. I replied, Okay. She then asked me my age. I didn’t get offended because usually when I’m asked this question, it is because I look younger than I am. I take it as a compliment. I replied, I will be 27 next week. She scoffed and said, Honey, you are still a child. You haven’t even begun to have any pain and suffering. After that encounter, her statement resonated in my spirit for a while. I asked myself: When did trials, tribulations, pain and suffering have an age limit? Should we as a society tell a child who loses a parent to get over it because they are not old enough to feel pain or heartache? Should we say to a child who was molested, Don’t worry about it. You’re too young to be traumatized by that experience. Of course we would not say this. It would be insensitive and would show lack of compassion to say such
