INTRODUCTION

I remember the voices of the adults. Sometimes, they talked all at the same time or laughed. I have a clear memory of a jar with water at the center of the table. I remember this one man, a tall, black, lean figure with a big smile. I really never knew what was happening in those meetings. I was about five years old. At that time, I remember not liking to open my eyes at night, as I used to feel a presence in the house. But I never saw anything. Until today, I remember the sensation, but after we stopped attending the meetings, that feeling disappeared.

I grew up in a family struggling to make enough money to pay the bills. My dad was and still is a strong-willed man and dedicated much of his time to work. My mom was also a woman who enjoyed her work but had to quit her professional life to follow my dad’s dream. She became very frustrated over the years, resenting her choices and needing to work with my dad. On top of the fact that my busy parents were often away due to work, my brother was a person with a short temper who would snap at me anytime he felt he should. This environment caused me to stay alert and aware of my surroundings, expecting that something terrible could happen anytime, coming from anywhere. This is typical behavior for kids coming from a not happy-camper family.

Although my home situation made me sensitive to any stress in the environment, my family also gave me a good sense of confidence and good memories.

Fast forward to around age 14. I used to go to the houses we would call, in poor translation, yard. This time, I knew we would practice a religion brought to Brazil by African people. Today, I understand that it was an adaptation that the slaves did to be able to practice their spirituality. Umbanda is the spiritual practice’s name, and I remember going to these celebrations for a few years. When I was close to 19-20 years old, my parents went back to attending mass in a Catholic church every day!

Like most in Brazil, my mom and dad were raised based on Catholic church guidelines. My brother and I attended Catholic school, run by nuns, from pre-school until high school. You must be confused by why I’m telling you all of this. Well, I have to explain. I was exposed to versatile ways of expressing faith, presenting the unseen, getting support, and creating a higher source of strength when life got too hard.

When my parents were divorced for about five years, the finances of my dad’s small business were not doing well. I remember seeing my dad, very early in the morning, kneeling down to the ground, bowed head, closed eyes, in front of his altar, praying for the Virgin Mary to help him conquer one more day. At that time, I was unaware of how much those scenes were imprinted on me. I didn’t understand the power of our inner connections and how much these connections can make or break a sense of our capability to create the life we want.

Recently, I was meditating about why, during the early years of my life, my parents, who were so rooted in the Catholic church, took a few years to delve into other spiritual and religious practices. My soul needed many experiences to see life as I see it today. So, I ended up in a family open to giving me this experience at such an early age.

I traveled through a few religions myself, such as Umbanda, Kardecist Spirit religion, Catholicism, other Christian practices, Wicca practices, and other energy practices. Those experiences became the basis for later navigating through so many different faith practices. All led me to study philosophy, Vedic classes, and others, which showed me that almost all approaches have the same core values. However, the path to achieving your goals could vary. Due to the time, country, and social class you are in, the practice of that faith would influence you.

After getting a sense of foundation for my spiritual practice, I was still looking for the best way to express myself as inside, I was confident of my connection. Still, when I was asked for a word of advice, I got confused about how to express what I wanted to say. I like to avoid religious words like God, karma, or prayer when speaking to someone else, even though I use these words at home with my family. My intention is not
