Six Months in Wigan - K. Scott Fuchs

    A Life Sentence

    A word in a line,

    Signed and dated -

    My heart has been eviscerated.

    The Spire of Standish

I can peer up at the chapel steeple and marvel in the nave and the chancel -

But seldom supress what cannot be explicated in expansile -

And still the dull throbbing; the recapitulated duress

That paralyzes in place and leaves no way to rest -

    Tremors ripple the ground under,

Disrupting slumber and weighing felicity asunder

Once upon a time, there was excitement and wonder

A ballerina, a figurine, now weaving through memory,

Dancing onward to the lonely melody, that follows me closely -

It's background sound accompanies the back-streets frequented,

The beaches visited, and the merriment of accomplishment

The bench where we sat, the halls where we met,

and your home, another amongst a row -

Of those that I've never known -

I pass by and stop, not just a mere blur whizzing by on the road

Regardless of the distance travelled or the shape of the bend of the curve -

You are in the accents I've heard and the actions observed,

A baseline of syncopations; a baseless invocation

Rooted in patience, facing life without a beautiful face whence

It's been six months, soon a year or a decade since,

Wondering all the while, what could have been....

A Poem in Her Memory Box

    A breath, a wish

    Expressed in a kiss

    Formed on her lips.

Her eyes sparkle with vigour -

Her irises shine with insight and gentleness

Inviting me to dive into the blue
