The Most Beautiful Treasure
I knew a girl in school, a friend throughout my youth
Dark hair and dark eyes, a beauty in all truth
We grew apart in friends, in studies, and in life
And grew into adulthood, to face both good and strife
The years have passed by slowly, and I have lost track of time
I see her only in a picture, and sometimes in my mind
And I wonder if life is good for her, and I wish her all the best
She is strong and smart and beautiful, to this I can attest
And then one day we meet again, this friend from long ago
I realize as I speak to her my feelings are aglow
She speaks to me with kindness, with truth, and with a smile
So I sit with her and chat and I need to stay awhile
The time passes so quickly, I wish it would never end
But we have to part, this friend and I, with life we must contend
As I leave I think to myself, where did I go wrong?
How did I miss her true beauty, as we grew all along?
I think about her every day, she fills my mind with wonder
But her life is far removed from me, we have been torn asunder
I wish I could go back in time to those days of long ago,
And hold her hand and walk with her and never let her go
Curse you fate, or god, or whatever powers that be
For I have found the most beautiful treasure
And yet you keep it from me

The brilliance of morning, the warmth on my face
Twilight on a beach in a faraway place
The still of the forest, so cool in the shade
A busy city
