WINTER

Seize this chance, young man,
To live as much as you can;
Take some stationery with you
And write to us of the view—
From deep behind enemy lines.
Hale and hearty when sent out,
To their cause, he was devout;
But too long spent in hailstorm
Of bullets from both sides of war—
Has left him with naught but scars.
His gait is heavy, and his pain is much,
He’s a pane that shatters at slightest touch;
Churning seas stir deep within
Not sure to flee or enter in—
And so he stands outside the gate.
The world that he now sees,
Is nothing like that of yester eve's;
And not to be contrary
It's like he never left, but was stationary—
While Time was the one that marched on.

The stately yew tree bore silent witness,
As the pregnant ewe laboured in distress;
You and I were fast asleep
From drinking rich, dark barley mead—
