    Finding Air - Sarah Burke

    Finding Air

    Finding Air

    Editor: Dr. James Pate

    Advisor: Monica Larson

To my parents and sister for showing continual support

To Derek for your continual outpouring of love

To Hope for standing beside me through years of friendship

And to Madi for endless excitement and support

    Sunday Morning

    Sunrise breaks upon the hill

The dew covered ground whispers as you walk amongst it,

    The wind

    Gentle yet painfully frigid.

Make sure the outfit looks proper,

    The shoes

    Formal yet not too high.

    The hair,

    Tame and mild.

The dress reaches an appropriate length.

A step into the faded white wooden building,

An air of musk and oak floats out the doors,

    At 8:30 the service begins,

    Some fall asleep,

    Some twiddle their thumbs,

But I for one decide to have a little fun,

I find the closest child and begin my game,

    I wiggle my nose,

Stick my tongue out and shoot them a wave.

Now the mother is frantically trying to quiet

    her child’s laughter,

One sharp look and it’s over.

    Stay quiet,

The preacher is folding his hands,

Make sure to close your eyes.

    Lunch is always a feast,

    Roast, potatoes, green beans, rolls,

And all the mac and cheese a girl could ask for.

I breathe out a sigh and closed my eyes,

    This would have been,

Grandma’s favorite kind of Sunday morning.

    Fickle Hearts

His hair is a helpless mess

Jostled like the crashing waves of the ocean

As he runs his hand through it

    His eyes slide open

    Drunken with laughter and happiness

    A grin forms suddenly
