Am I Doing This Right? - Kacie Silvers
Most of us ventured into adulthood and felt that yearning to care for a tiny, living thing. So, of course, we get a dog.
Isn't that the first thing we typically do as adults? Odd as it sounds, most of us are doing well just to take care of ourselves, but no, we need something more in our lives. Enter the first baby-the puppy. We walk it, play with it, feed it, spoil it.....we keep it alive. This pet becomes your baby and you think I've got this. No problem. Dog-motherhood suits me.
A little food, some attention, some belly rubs and everything is golden. We rock at that.
While this is good practice for keeping something other than ourselves alive, it is truly nothing like caring for a tiny human who you are solely responsible for raising into a good person. If Fido becomes a major jerk who bites mailmen later in life, no one really blames you. The responsibility of turning him into a contributing member of society does not really apply. As long as he doesn’t poop or pee in the house you get a gold star for his raising.
When you want to go out at night with friends, you put that pup in a crate or keep him safely secured in some type of area and off you go. Carefree. You can come in late, sleep in, go about your day after a quick walk and head scratch (the dog, not yourself). Nothing too terribly life changing about caring for a pet, although people seem to think that it is comparable to being a parent.
These people are mistaken.
One day, we decide we are ready for an actual baby. We create a registry and buy all the teeny, tiny baby clothes. Around 9 months and a couple days later we all very likely realized how little we actually knew about raising things. Things are messy and wonderful,
