Oliver panicked. He realized he was going so fast he wouldn’t be able to stop in time and was going to crash into the old oak tree.

It was a fine, warm, spring Saturday and Oliver’s Mom had gone to the store leaving Oliver alone. Finishing his breakfast, he was thinking about what he might do today. He walked outside and sat on the back step. Wildflowers were in bloom, bees were busy in their pedals, trees were sprouting their leaves, birds were singing while building nests, and winter’s chill had been replaced by a gentle warmth and a comforting breeze.

It would have been a good day for an adventure, but he hadn’t planned it out and it was already ten o’clock. He could go down to the pond and do a little fishing. In his experience, the fish bite in the early morning or in the late afternoon. All his friends were busy with their families, so he couldn’t play baseball or go bike riding. Oliver thought, I could go bike riding by myself. There was a long, round-about path down to the old oak. It would be fun to see how well his bike would do off-road.

Oliver looked down at his feet. He was wearing his slippers. Standing, he noticed a package from his Grandma. It was right next to where he had been sitting, but he hadn’t noticed it before. He sat back down on the step and opened it up. Inside was a compass. Looking at it, he noticed there was a black line at 45 degrees. There was also a squirt gun that looked like a six-shooter. It made him happy. Grandma knew that he was interested in the old west. There was a book upstairs that he had gotten for his birthday that was filled with western stories. He looked at the pistol closely. There was no place to put water in and the pistol’s barrel was plugged. Oliver shrugged; he thought it looked cool, anyway. Putting the compass and the pistol in his pocket, he went upstairs to get ready for a bike ride.

He retrieved his pack and looked inside; a rope, 3 bottles of water from yesterday, his knife, his poncho, his foldable safari hat, a change of clothes, some thin wire on a spool, his fishing kit, matches, flint and steel, and two packages of chewy fruit candy. Everything he could need for an adventure, even if he wasn’t going on one. It’s better to be prepared. He put the compass and pistol in his pack.

Oliver kicked off his slippers and went to his sock drawer. He threw all the socks in the drawer onto the floor. All the socks were gifts from his grandma, and Oliver knew how magical they were. He would pick a mis-matched set and on them would be images of where his next adventure would
