Oliver Oddsocks Pirates Treasure - Ken Lehnig
Chapter 1
An Autumn Adventure
image-placeholderUnexpected treasures arrived in a package, signaling the start of an extraordinary journey.
Oliver Oddsocks looked out his window. It was a beautiful autumn morning. The leaves on the trees had turned yellow, orange, and red. He had arisen at dawn, as was his custom on an adventure day. Oliver had made his bed and placed on the bedspread all the things he would need for today’s adventure: three water bottles, his multi-tool, his pocketknife, twine, his fishing kit with hooks and line, matches, a canvas tarp, his flashlight, and a fresh set of clothes. Being very practiced, he packed his backpack in seconds.
Oliver walked over to his desk where his books and special collections were all well-organized. He picked up a model of a spaceship that he had just completed. Putting it back in the same place it was when he picked it up, he turned to look at his room. All was in place, and he was ready. He looked down and noticed that he was barefooted. He wiggled his toes and walked over to his dresser.
Oliver’s mother put all his white socks neatly bundled in his top drawer. Two years ago, his grandmother began sending colorful printed socks every week. He would take them off the little hanger and throw them in a drawer. Oliver loved them. One morning, being in his usual hurry, he grabbed a pair, slipped them on, put his boots on, and ran to catch the school bus. His mother called out, Oliver, your socks don’t match! Oliver Oddsocks!
The name stuck, as did his amusement. Oliver began wearing Grandma’s miss-matched socks every day.
He opened the drawer where he kept the socks he got from his grandmother and threw all the loose socks on the floor. Oliver sat down cross-legged and spread them out. Closing his eyes, he picked two. When he opened his eyes, he was holding a green sock and a red sock. Both socks had pirates and pirate ships printed on them. He put them on and put on his boots. While he was tying the laces, he remembered he got another package from his grandmother. He said to himself, It could be another pair of socks, but she usually sends socks on Tuesday and Saturday. Today was Monday.
Oliver opened the package. Inside was a soap bubble bottle, a bubble pipe, a big silver fishing lure, and a two-pack of plastic ponchos.
