    The Discovery

Oliver eased the controls forward, taking the spacecraft into a steady descent. He could see the tiny speck of the Martian habitat far in the distance. He switched on the communication channel. ‘Martian One, this is supply ship Alpha Six, requesting permission to land.’

‘Welcome back Alpha Six, we’re getting hungry down here; permission to land granted,’ came the reply from ground control. Oliver slowed the craft to a crawl as they approached the landing zone.

‘Can I do the landing today?’ asked Jane, his co-pilot and at times, most annoying sister.

‘Sure, you need the practice,’ he replied with a wide grin. ‘Passing control over to co-pilot.’

Jane gripped the spacecraft’s controls, guiding it smoothly towards the landing zone. Almost instantly, a massive bang echoed through the craft, sending it spiralling out of control. Blaring alarms and flashing warning lights filled the cabin.

‘Oliver, I can’t control it!’ Jane yelled as the ground loomed dangerously close. The incessant ‘whoop, whoop, whoop’ of the alarms grew louder as the Martian terrain hurtled towards them.

Oliver grabbed the controls, but the craft wouldn’t respond. He looked over to Jane, her face etched in panic and despair, and then he braced for the impending crash…

Suddenly, he jolted awake, his bedside alarm sounding its morning call. ‘What a dream!’ he murmured, silencing the alarm, and springing out of bed.

Oliver slipped on his glasses and made his way downstairs for breakfast. He poured Choco Flakes into a bowl and added a generous amount of milk. Once he was done eating, he prepared two cheese sandwiches, one for his school lunch and the other for a snack later. He neatly packed them into his lunchbox, along with a bag of plain crisps and a shiny, vibrant red apple.

As he went upstairs to brush his teeth and dress for school, his sister Jane rushed down the steps in her typical last-minute panic.

‘You better move quickly, or you’ll be late for school,’ she warned.

‘Good morning, Jane. I’ll be on time, don’t worry,’ he assured his sister as she rushed out the front door. Oliver was very fond of his elder sister and missed the quality time they used to share. Ever since Jane began attending secondary school, she had been swamped with homework and engrossed in her new social circle, leaving her with little time for her younger brother.

Ten minutes later, Oliver was ready for school. He grabbed his backpack and peeked into the living room where his dad was watching the morning news.

‘Bye, Dad. I’m off to school,’ Oliver announced.

‘Have a good day son, and be careful on that bike,’ his dad responded in his usual protective tone.

Leaving the house, he swiftly adjusted his bike helmet and hopped onto his trusty BMX, which he had been given for his tenth birthday, the best birthday present ever, he often thought to himself.

Oliver attended Burton Junior School, just a short bike ride away from his home. His usual route took him through the narrow passage beside his house, past the local allotments, and across the playing field.

Now nearly eleven, Oliver had a distinctive look with gravity-defying blond hair and black-rimmed glasses. Though some classmates labelled him a geek or nerd, he was unfazed. Fascinated by topics like computer science, robotics, and space exploration, Oliver was more than happy to embrace his interests. If being passionate about science made him a nerd, then he wore that label with pride. Oliver was perfectly content with just being
