Taffy for Tattle
Oliver - The Seaside Sweet Shop
Bitter people were never late, and you'd bet that on the minute they'd show up on time. There was simply no one to bother with them if at all possible, lest they wanted a day turning sour as curdled milk. Everywhere Oliver went with his old man, Mr. Brystill, no one ever asked anything. Like how many jars of blackberry jam they'd made, or if they needed shingles for the leakiest damn roof in Porttown. All folks did was give Oliver and younger brother Lyle pitiful looks and shooed away their children when their father was around, regardless if he was having an outburst or not.
But charming people never got anywhere in a hurry, and no one was slower than Mayor Poplin. They'd crossed the lane and stepped one foot inside Seaside Sweets when athird person stopped to catch the most popular man in Porttown for his attention.
Morning, Mayor. Sea is churning up something odd on the currents these last weeks,
Mr. Liffen said, and leaned in close. The winds go into the woods, waking them up-
You boys go on,
Mayor Poplin said, cutting off the lighthouse keeper’s words with a wince. Ah, let’s take this talk somewhere the younger ones won’t hear, yes?
Handed the money, Oliver gave half to Lyle and meandered over towards the counter. Lyle, having waited for over ten minutes and tittered more than a bumblebee on a flower at the money.
Maybe I'll get a milkshake. No, a bag of taffy. What do you think I should get?
Lyle said, and eyed his older brother, who on most days, was the only one who kept track of his comings and goings.
Oliver shrugged, eyed his half of the donation, and handed over another coin. There you can get both now. And by the look of Penny Liffen, I'd say you will end up sharing half of it.
Lyle gave a look around, and froze at the pink gusseted up Penny, who held a stick of equally pink cotton candy. She waved over Lyle, with her two plaits of hair shimining.
Don't say anything about it,
Lyle said, and gave out a long sigh. I'm getting my milkshake and taffy and eating it myself.
Suit yourself,
Oliver said, and waved over towards Penny. But she's awful cute today.
Lyle rocked on his heels. Yea. But ever since summer hit it's like she's gotten all... I don't know.
Yea, I know what that’s like,
Oliver said. It was one of those things that never hit you until you're in it, and once it does nothing is the same. Even if you want it to be. Be nice. You'll regret it in a few months if you aren't. She’s got eyes for you.
Well, you think I've got a crush on her?
Lyle said, catching up to his brother's tone.
I don't know. But maybe,
Oliver said, and shrugged. Maybe one day.
Lyle gave a smirk. Well I heard that Opal Poplin likes you better than anybody else. And she's going to ask you to go steady on the Wild Hunt.
Oliver nodded, recalling the random note he'd found covered in hearts slipped into his coat pocket without a name early that summer. Opal kept on finding reasons to walk further down Hamfrill Lane when school got out, and they’d caught moments together. But Oliver doubted his mixed feelings for Opal. sensing her a young woman with a
