    Chapter 1

    Beyond the Pond

    With his lunchbox packed, he slung his backpack over his shoulder. Today, he would hike further into the woods than ever before.

    Summer vacation was almost over. Oliver rose early this morning, as he does every morning. More so when it was a day he was off for an adventure, and not wanting to wake his mother. He took a book of ghost stories that his grandma had sent him down from the shelf. He opened it to the story he was reading before he went to bed. It was a scary one. He shivered, closed the cover, and put it back on the shelf with all his other books. Reaching for his three-sided hat, he thought about putting it on, but then decided not to. It was time to go.

    He was all dressed except for his shoes and socks. He walked to the dresser and opened the drawer with all the socks his grandma sends him. Taking them out, he tossed all the socks on the floor. Sitting down, he spread them out, and picked a grey sock with ghosts on it and a black one, also with ghosts on it. Oliver felt a little shiver go down his spine. He realized this adventure might be a bit scary. Oliver chuckled, Scary or not, I am always up for an adventure.

    Putting the ghostly socks on, he placed the rest of the socks back in the drawer.

    He smiled thinking about when his mother first called him Oliver Oddsocks. It was when he had rushed from the house one morning to catch the school bus with mismatched socks. The name stuck and from then on he would only wear mismatched socks, the ones his grandma sent him.

    It occurred to Oliver he was wasting time. He hurriedly sat down on the bed, put on his shoes, and tied the laces.

    Knowing today was an adventure day, Oliver picked up his backpack. He had packed it last night with wire, rope, a flashlight, matches, a blanket, water, the multi-purpose knife his grandma sent him, and his rain poncho. Today he was going to hike further into the woods than ever before.
