If you are brave enough to say goodbye, life will reward you with a new hello.

    —PAULO COELHO

It was a crisp December evening in Reno, Nevada. The snow had blanketed the city, and Christmas would soon arrive. I walked into the dimly lit hospital room where my mom had been for over a month due to stage-four metastatic colon cancer. I’d made it about three steps in when the words darted out of her mouth, Janie, I’m done!

I looked at her confused, not wanting to understand. What do you mean, you’re done?

"I’m done. I’m not doing this anymore. I’ve already spoken to hospice, and I am duh-un."

"Do you mean, like done done? Done with life? You are quitting life?"

Yes, I am. I am quitting!

It took a few seconds to catch my breath and let the grip around my heart soften. I was surprised by my own words: Well, I am disappointed.

I couldn’t look at her. Quitting, I said, with an air of indignation. "That is not how you raised us! You didn’t raise us to be quitters!" I slowly walked to her bedside, feeling the warmth of tears welling up in my eyes. I reached for her hand as the tears fell. She was unmoved.

I continued, now more gently, You really don’t want to live anymore?

She scoffed at me, THIS is NOT living.

Then what do you want to do?

    I want to go home.

    When?

    Now!

Sarcastically, I repeated, So, what, you just want to go home, get into bed, and never get out?

My mom looked at me squarely, and with matched sarcasm, she said, Probably.

There was a long pause as I sat in disbelief at this unfolding before me.

    That’s what you want?

What I want, she stated, is to go home and die in my own bed with my family around me.

    I was numb.

OK, I said reluctantly. I touched her cheek gently and asked her if she knew how loved she was. She smiled. I then asked, Are we good?

    She nodded yes.

Is there anything we need to say?

She shook her head no. I agreed, except there was so much I wanted to say.

Over the next twelve hours, I shared the news with my brothers, waited for her to kick my dad in the nuts (which is how he described getting the news), coordinated with hospice, scheduled caregivers, told my children, and began my grief journey.

We got her home and into her freshly made bed with its beautiful view of the snow-covered hills that were part of the backyard landscape. While the birds fluttered about the treetops, she asked if any bunnies had appeared. She had a childlike spirit and loved nature, birds, and bunnies especially. The sun was shining, and it was a complete contrast to the drab hospital room she’d been in for a month. She was home.

Over the next few days, we chatted during the brief moments when she was alert. I would sit by her bedside and watch her sleep, and I’d think about life without her and wonder what she was thinking too. Once when I asked her, she shook her head and said, Just nonsense. We laughed at team Gena and Jane, the two of us bumbling idiots trying to help her go potty. We went through her jewelry and assigned pieces to grandkids; I got her wedding ring. She told me stories of her childhood, many that I knew already but didn’t want to forget, and we shared some of her favorite jokes. I shared pictures and text messages from family and friends. She would complain about still being around, and I would internalize not
