MARTIN’S DEDICATION
To my grandma Mae
(gone but never forgotten).
To my dad Todd. You showed me many terrific things and experiences. You made me want to explore. Love you Dad.
To my brother, Matthew. It wasn’t easy being my brother. I know this and I love you.
To my extended family: stepmother, stepfather, stepbrothers, stepsisters, aunts, uncles, and cousins. We are a deeply close family and I appreciate all your support throughout my life.
Special thanks to Pete Pallares and Armando Luna-Medina for believing I could do this.
To Michelle Garcia Winner and Randy Dodge for teaching me to be social – a lifelong process.
To my church family. Thank you for all your prayers and encouragement.
I would never have written this book without my family’s support. Having you all there supporting me through my struggles in life with autism has not gone unnoticed. You’re the best and I appreciate you all. You all mean so much to me. I love you and thank you. I want to thank God most of all because without Him none of this is possible.
STELLA’S DEDICATION
To my son, Martin. Thank you for being funny, kind, challenging, understanding, not understanding, and honest.
I love everything about you.
FOREWORD
Sometimes in life, we are lucky enough to meet someone that just leaves you a better person; Martin is one of those people. He has a not so quiet dedication to himself and a fearless forward motion despite his fears and limitations. Martin has always been a talker, a dreamer, and a doer. And he has probably done more things in his short life than most of us will ever get to do in a lifetime. This is not only due to his parents but to his constant desire to better himself. To go and do things on his own or by subtly or not so subtly, persuading some family member to do it with him. I am his aunt and his godmother. I was his go-to partner for fitness expos and MMA fights, his cousins were go-to partners for football, baseball, and soccer games. If there was something he wanted to do or some direction he felt he needed to go, he would call and at first hint around a subject followed by when can I schedule that,
or I’ll look into dates and get back to you,
which he did. If he wasn’t sure about something, he would say, I’ll get back to you on that.
The funny thing is that in this process of Martin finding a companion to accompany him to an event, he kept this family together. God works in mysterious ways; the things He mysteriously creates are sometimes healers for everyone involved. We are blessed to have Martin as this beautiful, unique glue that binds our hearts together in the funniest of ways.
Sports: Martin loves sports. He can tell you anything about every sports game out there, players, stats, you name it, he has an answer for you. If he doesn’t, he will find it and then never again forget it. It is indeed a gift; I have used that gift a few times. I’ve been at events where people are discussing certain sporting events or players that I know nothing about; a quick call to Martin, and I’m suddenly well versed.
I have seen this beautiful soul overcome so much from the rejection and ridicule of his peers, to the costly struggle with Asperger’s, to the surgical procedure that left his entire back held together by titanium rods, the divorce of his parents, and integration into new extended families. Despite his fears, he continually attended school through successes and failures to find a career that truly excites him. One thing about Martin; if he knows what he wants, he will wholeheartedly fight to get it, like a steam engine without a braking system. How could you not admire that constant forward motion personality?
I am honored that Martin asked me to write this. My words cannot honestly explain the magnitude of what he brings to this family. He is our blessing, and a reminder not to quit but to find a better way.
A real example is if one thing doesn’t work, then try something else, and if that doesn’t work, try again and again and again. If no one wants to go, he goes alone; that’s a hard thing to do, and yet he does it. I admire everything about him. He has made me a better version of myself.
I love him to pieces.
