Originally I intended for this to be a collection of my thoughts, to be kept private and for myself; however, after careful review and consideration I decided to share them, my thoughts, with you, the reader. I hope you enjoy reading it. May it be as beneficial to you as it has been to others. This is for all of those people who have doubted me, isolated me, and ignored me. For my mother and father, my exes, managers, professors, coworkers, my friends, family, and even my dog; Marley, I write this for you. Thank you to all of you who have supported me on this journey and realizing that I am just like you, a work in progress. I could not have done it without you. Introduction
These are the thoughts, feelings, and emotions of a young black man. A man; who, like you, has suffered, endured, and faced countless hardships. A man who did not understand what he wanted from life. A man who did not know how to express the way he feels. A man who grew up without a father figure. A man who wants to become better, to become the man I know I am deep inside, the man I know you are, the man we both aspire to become. These thoughts dive deep. Exploring every chamber, crevice, corner of the mind. This book does not only apply to men of color. It applies to everyone, even women. As a person of color (POC) in North America, we face common struggles and challenges that our counterparts don’t. Police brutality, racism, inequality, and injustices are only a small list of the problems we face. We have to do better, we have to be better. Especially if we are aspire for greatness going to achieve it. What we fail to realize it’s not another person’s job to lift you up when you are down. It’s yours. You decide whether or not you will be a product of your circumstances, you decide whether you will drown or swim. Fall or fly. Live or die. This life to live is yours and no one else’s.
Hardships and inequality are a part of life. Being Black, Hispanic, any other ethnicity or race other than white is like playing the game of life on hard mode. Anyone who tells you different is telling you a story. What matters is how you play the game. Whether you use cheats or play fair. Fundamentally this life to live is yours. You get the last say in how you decide to live it. As man we are taught that we should not feel, that our emotions should be kept within and we should not openly express them because it is not something a man does. Men are taught to be strong, tough, and partake in manly things like sports. We are raised on defense. We build up these walls and the only way we know how to tear them down, or dispel all the excess energy we carry is through activities. Most of which are not always positive.
Men have become ignorant; we have forgotten how to express ourselves positively using words. However, it’s okay to be sensitive. It’s okay to be open. It’s okay to express yourself, not only through actions, but words. Men, you have feelings too. Don’t be afraid to express those feelings. This book was written to express the thoughts, feelings, and actions of a man. These are the things we deal with on
