Introduction

It was an August summer day, what was supposed to be a good day turned into a cross road experience! I had gone into the lab that day, picked up my samples and driven to another laboratory to use the microscope. I was down to my last of 5 samples. This was going to be a good day, I mused to myself. In my excitement to accomplish my goals, I pulled the sample holder out of the microscope too quickly and broke the suction! As the microscope began to beep and the lights moved from green to red, reality quickly set in, I had broken the microscope! This was an expensive piece of equipment that many graduate students in New York used. Hence, breaking the microscope did not only mean that it would affect my ability to get data but other graduate students as well. Feelings of failure and a sense of loss set in, and the tears began to flow. This was the last thing I needed! This week, in my view, was turning out to be the worst week of my life, with deadlines looming and impossible demands from my advisor. I felt crushed under the weight. With a cloud of sadness, guilt, and shame I told the technical staff what happened.
