What Happened To Hanna - Khalil Kanyerere

    CHAPTER ONE - WEDNESDAY

    Hanna, stay after class.

Mrs. Phiri, I have to be home as soon as possible.

Hanna, it should only take a minute.

I have to be home pronto. If not, he’ll beat me again. I can’t. Maybe for a

second. If anything serious comes up, I’ll just run. Hanna, just breathe. You can do this.

Hanna, may I see your left wrist?

    Why? Is something wrong?

I don’t know. You tell me.

Oh crap! She knows. I’ve got to run now!

Hanna! Let me see your wrist, please!

    No, you can’t!

Now this is my chance! Time to run!

    Hanna!

Wow! That was close. I just can’t stand his belt. He’ll be drinking, too. Just like all of the other nights. I wish Mom could come home. I wish Grandma would get

better. Things would be better then. Here I go. I’m home now.

Where the hell have you been!?

Dad. I had to stay after classes to talk to a teacher.

Bullshit! I’ll beat that lying habit right out of you!

I’m telling the truth! Mrs. Phiri, my social studies teacher, wanted to talk to me! I promise!

Oh no! He’s totally drunk and has his belt with metal spikes on. Just remember: I can’t cry! It’ll only be worse. Jesus help me!

Come here you worthless piece of shit! I’m going to beat you until you turn blue!

Daddy, please! Please! Please! I won’t be late anymore! I promise! You’re right, you won’t!

Whew! I think I escaped that one. I was really close to a beating.

I hope this beating will do you some good! It’ll help you remember that promise!

No! Here it goes again. Just let it be over. I don’t want to live like this anymore! I give up!

    *    *    *

Look at me. My face is all messed up. There are bruises all over my body. How

am I going to cover all of these up? It’s no use! Look at me! I’m hideous! I need my blade! It can’t hurt worse than this. Just a few cuts to calm me down. But

every cut I make. Each time going a little deeper. Pressing a little harder. The

blood flowing down my left hand. Looking at the puddle of blood on the floor. It

doesn’t hurt at all. It’s my only option. My father hates me; my mom doesn’t

even think I’m enough for her to stay alive. Even I hate me! Oh no! The bleeding isn’t stopping! It’s getting worse! I can’t stop it! What’s wrong with me? Why

    can’t I be normal? Have a normal family. Why can’t I enjoy life? It’s pointless! I

hate myself! I hate who I am. I hate my family. I hate my whole life! Why can’t I  do what Mom attempted? It’d be easy. Just cut so deep. Watch the blood flow out. Then I’d just let myself bleed. And I’d finally be free.... The bleeding has

stopped and it’s  11:30. I should go to go to bed now.

    CHAPTER 2 - THURSDAY

6:45. Great, it’s almost time for me to leave and I have noway to cover up these bruises. I have no make-up. I can cover up my scars with a bandage and lots of  bracelets. And on top of that I have to see Mrs. Phiri twice today. Well this is as

good as it’s going to get so I guess I’m off to school.

Good morning, Hanna. Can we speak?

    I guess.

    Can I seeyour left wrist?

Here goes nothing. Since I have a lot of bracelets, on I’ll remove them very slowly. Just to prolong it.

Just to inform you, I know about what your father does to you.

    You can’t say anything!

I’m sorry, but I have to. Now, your wrist.

She can’t tell anyone! Somehow my father will find out and it’ll be over for me. I can’t believe she has to check my wrist. If she already knows I cut she shouldn’t

have to check it. Maybe if I rebel then she’ll just give up. Agh!

    No!

Hanna. Give me your wrist! Now!

    Fine.

Hanna .... Honey... you’ve got to stop this. This isn’t good for you.

Why? It’s not like it matters, like I matter to anyone! I just can’t take it anymore! Don’t cry. Don’t cry. Oh,who cares? If I’m not allowed to cry in front of her,

what’s another beating going to do?

    "I have to tell
