C H Clepitt has a Master’s Degree in English Literature from the University of the West of England. As their Bachelor’s Degree was in Drama, and their Master’s Dissertation focused on little known 18th Century playwright Susannah Centlivre, Clepitt’s novels are extremely dialogue driven, and it has often been observed that they would translate well to the screen.Since graduating in 2007, Clepitt gained experience in community and music journalism, before establishing satirical news website, Newsnibbles in 2010. In 2011 they published A Reason to Stay, which follows the adventures of disillusioned retail manager, Stephen, as he is thrust into village life and the world of AmDram. Clepitt’s feminist fantasy, The Book of Abisan not only crosses worlds, but confuses genres, and has been described as a crime drama with magic. Not liking labels, Clepitt has often said they don't like the way that choosing a genre forces you to put your book into a specific little box, and instead prefers to distort the readers’ expectations and keep them guessing. Most recently Clepitt's Magic Mirror collection does just that, retelling classic fairy tales as a combination of historical fiction, magical fantasy, espionage and crime drama, all with a queer twist!

Prologue
Well, I’m glad you’re awake.
Karen shifts awkwardly in her seat.
I wonder why she came.
Are you?
I reach for the water next to my bed. My lips and throat feel very dry.
Why wouldn’t I be? You always do this!
she snaps. You can come home,
she pauses. Until you’ve recovered.
What?
I blink at her. Just then Laura bursts in.
Dad! You’re awake!
She hurries over to me and stops awkwardly at the side of my bed. I think she was going to hug me but changed her mind. I find myself wondering, not for the first time, where everything went wrong.
Hi, honey,
I smile at her, pretending not to notice the awkwardness. How’s uni?
Oh… um… good?
She looks to Karen as though she needs her permission to talk to me. I can feel myself growing irritated, so take some more water and lean back against the pillows.
I was just saying,
Karen says stiffly. Your dad can come and stay with us until he recovers.
I’ll be fine,
I say carefully, placing my water down again. I don’t need any charity, and someone needs to feed Henry.
Don’t be stubborn, Craig!
Karen chastises me. It’s the tone again. I swallow hard. I don’t want to argue, or snap at her in front of Laura. The separation has been tough on her, I know it has.
I’ll be fine,
I say again, more firmly.
Maybe he doesn’t want to sleep in the spare room whilst you shag Mitchell, eh, Mum?
Laura says with a tension in her voice.
Laura!
Karen snaps, but has no other response.
Well, it’s true,
she mutters.
Mitchell?
I look at her. That slimy arsehole from the office?
He is not slimy!
Karen is on the defensive now. I know you wanted me to be a nun, Craig, but I simply refuse. If you want help when you get out of the hospital, call me.
She turns and leaves.
Mitchell?
I raise my eyebrows at Laura. She nods awkwardly. Slimy bastard.
I take some more water.
Dad,
Laura says quietly. I’ve been feeding Henry.
She still stands far away from me. I don’t know what happened. We used to be so close. Admittedly I haven’t seen so much of her since she’s been at uni, but that’s normal. More fun things to do, right?
Oh, thanks, honey.
I smile at her.
I could move in with you, if you want, until you’re recovered. Maybe help you out. You know it’s summer now…
Sure.
I study her. Mitchell there a lot?
Quite a lot, yeah.
You can stay with me as long as you want, love. Always, if you want to. I wouldn’t want to be around him, and I don’t have boobs!
I wink at her.
She laughs and looks at her feet. Thanks, Dad. If it’s OK.
Course it is. What’s wrong, honey? Not just Mitchell. Is it boy trouble? Do I need to visit someone?
Dad… I’m a lesbian…
Oh…
I feel like this is something I should have already known. Like maybe spotted it, or something. So, girl trouble?
She bursts into tears and runs over to me and gives me a hug. I’m not really expecting it. We haven’t hugged since… I don’t really remember.
What is it?
I ask. Whatever it is, we can fix it, it can’t be that bad.
Mum said not to tell you!
She says, pulling away from me. She said you wouldn’t get it. Police culture… She said it’d change everything! I’ve felt so alone! And bloody Mitchell! Constantly looking at me, and making comments, and I’ve just felt so alone!
My blood begins to boil. How dare Karen try and turn Laura against me? How dare she? I did nothing! I know why she left. I’d sort of assumed she’d been cheating on me. I didn’t really care. As long as she came home and kept the family together, I didn’t care. It’s not like I was satisfying those needs for her. But she left - well, she kicked me out - and I understood. I’d wanted to keep it amicable. Laura had gone to uni and it was just us, so… But this! What was the point of this? Does she hate me so much that she wants to keep my daughter away from me? I take a deep breath.
Well, perhaps your mother doesn’t know me as well as she thinks she does,
is all I say.
She wipes her eyes and pulls up a chair. Wanna do the crossword?
She asks, reaching for the paper that is folded up next to the bedside table.
Sure, gimme a clue.

Chapter 1: Retired
What are you saying?
I ask the chief as he sits opposite me, shuffling paperwork.
Look, Craig,
he sounds awkward. He bloody well should! I’ve given my life to the force. You’ve been off for six months, and the doctors say it might be another six before you can walk properly again. We both know you don’t want to be riding a desk for the rest of your career.
What are you offering my member?
