    Chapter One

    I was nestled in the comfort of my room, engrossed in exploring the features of my newly acquired iPhone when the familiar ringtone pierced through the air. With a sigh, I picked up the call to find my friend Tammy Louis on the other end.

    Hey Gary! Did your iPhone arrive? she asked eagerly, her voice brimming with excitement.

    Yes, Tammy. I did mention it before, didn't I? I replied, my tone laced with a hint of annoyance. Her persistent inquiries about my iPhone had begun to wear on my patience over the past week.

    Oh, right. Sorry about that. So, anything interesting happening? she inquired, hoping to steer the conversation into new territories.

    Not much, I responded nonchalantly, not wanting to divulge too much information.

    Are you planning on attending the Christmas dance? she probed, her curiosity evident in her voice.

    No, I answered plainly. The upcoming school dance had prompted several girls to ask me to accompany them, yet I had politely declined every single invitation.

    Why not? Tammy questioned, her tone tinged with surprise.

    Well, they're just not my type, I explained, searching for the right words to convey my feelings.

    Her sharp intake of breath was unmistakable, and I could sense that my response had either offended her or left her disappointed. It was as if I had encountered a spider, triggering that instinctive panic mode within me.

    Gary! Those girls are the epitome of attractiveness and popularity in our school. You're missing out by turning them down. I'm genuinely disappointed, she scolded, her words carrying a mix of concern and reproach.

    I had my reasons for doing so, I said hesitantly, the weight of an unspoken truth burdening my conscience.

    Why? Tammy pressed, her curiosity unabated.
