    Chapter One

There once was a little girl name Lily, but this girl was special because she had two different coloured eyes: one was blue and the other one was brown. Her older brother Andy had only one colour, blue and her mom Mary also had blue eyes and her dad Jonathan had brown eyes.

One day Lilly was at school with her brother who was in Year 14 while Lily was in Year 9. Lily and her friends were sitting in class when one of the students gave her a note and placed it on the desk where she was sitting. She opened the note and saw it said, Freak. You’re a freak. She then looked around to see who had given her the note and realised that it was the boy sitting three desks behind her. He smiled at her.

At lunch time she sat next to her friends, but they got up and walked away as they didn’t want to be with her anymore and that made her sad. She started to cry while eating her lunch. Her brother was on the other side of the school grounds and noticed that his sister was crying. He put his hand up and asked the teacher, May I drink some water as my throat is hurting?

    Yes, she said.

Andy then walked out of the classroom and walked towards his sister and sat down next to her.

What’s wrong, sister? said Andy giving her a cuddle.

I got this note and it says freak and now no one wants to sit with me, said Lily crying while putting her head down. It’s okay. Look, after school we can go out and do something, just you and me. What do you say? said Andy.

I would like that, thank you.

Alright I have to go back to class, but I’ll see you soon.

So, Andy walked back to class and saw the teacher was watching him. He then said to himself great as he was aware that the teacher knew what he had done. She said I know you lied to me about getting water, but I saw you talking to your sister. What where you talking about?

I’m sorry miss that I lied, but I saw my sister crying because someone in her class called her a freak and as her brother, I will not just sit there and watch her cry. If you want to put me in detention then you can, said Andy looking down on the ground then back at the teacher who was smiling,

No, you’re not going to get a detention. I’m proud of you for standing up for your sister. While she is in class, you can stay with her, if you like. I will let the teacher know about the bully in her class.

    You really mean it.

    Yes, I do mean it.

    Thank you.

You’re welcome now go back to class and tell no one about this kindness.

I won’t, thanks again miss, said Andy and opened the door and sat back on his seat. The teacher walked in behind him and started teaching about the Roman Empire. Twenty minutes later, Andy was sitting next to his sister during her English class. The bully was watching her, and her brother and he was not happy so when school finished, he was able to talk to her without her brother. He said, Hey freak, why is your brother coming to our classroom?

None of your business. He was allowed to by his teacher.

Look everyone, the freak needs a babysitter.

Everyone turned and pointed at her and laughed at her. She was sad and Andy was angry.

Her brother came towards the bully and punched him and said to him, Don’t talk about my sister like that.

Andy. Go to the principal’s office now, said the teacher who came towards them.

    Ha-ha, said the bully.

You too James, said the teacher and both boys walked to the principal’s office while Lilly sat on the chair waiting for her brother.

Now boys, punching each other is not allowed in the school ground, especially in the classroom, so who started it?

He did, said Andy pointing at James.

Can you tell me why? said the principal.

He was making fun of my sister and called her a freak, said Andy.

And why were you calling her a freak, James?

    Because of her eyes, sir.

What’s wrong with her eyes James?

Nothing sir, it’s just that she has two different coloured eyes, Sir, said James.

Well, that is not very nice. I want you to write out these words one hundred times: I will not make fun of Lily."

But sir, he punched me in the face. Why don’t you let him do it as well?

James, you made fun of her and I want you to write it down a hundred times. Andy will get a warning but, if he does it again, he too will write a hundred words, said the principal looking at Andy and smiled.

    But sir that’s not fair.

Would you like to make it two hundred.

    No sir.

Very well; off you go and I’ll see you both in the morning.

So, Andy and lily started walking back home while James had to write out the words a hundred times. He did not like the idea of writing down so many words.

Meanwhile Andy was at home doing his homework and Lily was standing at the front of his door. He then stopped and looked at her and said, What?

Nothing I just wanted to say thank you for today.

You’re welcome. You’re my sister and I’m not going to let that bully, bully you anymore. If anything happens, tell me.

I will thanks again. So did you get into trouble?

Nope, I just got a warning that’s all. James had to write out some words a hundred times.

    Okay.

Yeh, well I got some homework I need to do.

    Same here, see you later.

    See you later sis.

Back at James’s house he began to argue with his father.

Why didn’t you tell Andy to write a hundred words?

Like I told you before, it’s not nice to make fun of people because they are different, I thought I taught you better than that.

That’s not fair, you’re my father you should be helping me.

Yes, I am your father, and I am also your principal and you will do what I have given you and I want it done by morning, said Alfred.

You can’t tell me what to do. We are not at school.

Go to your room now! yelled Alfred.

Fine! yelled James and walked into his room and slammed the door. Martha walked in and looked at Alfred.

Alfred just sat down and drank his beer and said, What am I going to do with that boy?

You must be patient with him Alfred, said Martha walking up to him and sitting on the couch.

He needs to learn that being different is no laughing matter, said Alfred.

I know, but he’s a child. Give him time to learn this, said Martha.

He’s not a child Martha, he’s a grown boy and, as his principal, he needs to know that.

But as his father you need to give him time. You’re not at school so you can be his father at the moment.

    I guess you’re right.

I know I am, smiled Martha.

Alright I’ll talk to him, said Alfred.

    Thank you, said Martha.

After he finished his beer, Alfred went into James’s room and saw him writing out the words whilst lying on his bed. He then picked the paper and saw the writing.

Hey James, can I talk to you for a minute.

Sure, said James and sat up and put the pen down on his bed. He looked at his father who was standing at the door. Alfred then walked in and sat next to James.

Look, I’m sorry I yelled at you. I just want you to know that you can’t be mean to someone who is different.

I know. I’m sorry dad, said James.

So where are you up to?

I’ve done 67 lines. I’ve still got more to write.

Well, you can stop at 67. Just remember what I told you. Okay?

I will thanks dad, said James.

You’re welcome. Now get some sleep.

    Can I eat something first?

    Sure.

    Hey Dad.

    Yeh.

I think she might be a werewolf. You told me what werewolves were like and I think she might be because of the eyes.

    Are you sure?

    I don’t know. I’m guessing.

That doesn’t matter; right now, you need to finish your dinner and make sure your homework is done and go to bed.

Okay, said James and went out of his room to the kitchen and grabbed some food to eat then, once he was done, he went back to his room and went to sleep.

Morning came and James and his dad got ready for school. James sat down and started eating his breakfast while his dad just drank his coffee then grabbed his bag and they both went to the car and drove to school. When they got there, Alfred hooked James by the arm and said, I don’t want to see you in my office, so you behave, said Alfred.

    Yes dad, said James.

    Good. Let’s go, said Alfred.

James started walking into the classroom when he saw Andy and Lily walking nearby. He then stopped Andy and said to him, Hey Andy, can I talk to you, for a minute?

    Sure, what’s up? said Andy.

Look, I’m sorry I called your sister a freak, I didn’t mean it.

Look, it’s fine. We’ve always been called freaks our whole lives, so you don’t need to apologise.

Well, I wanted to, I was wondering if we could be friends.

    Friends?

If you don’t want to, I’ll understand. Why would you want to be friends with someone who called their sister a freak? Anyways I got to go to class.

    James, we can be friends.

Cool, I’ll see you later, smiled James.

Lily walked up to Andy and turned to him and said, What was all that about?

He just wanted to be friends, said Andy.

Why? He called me a freak, said Lily.

I know, but people change so give him a chance.

    Alright, I will.

    Good, said Andy.

When he had said that the school bell rang, and they went to class.

A few hours later the school bell rang for lunch and they all went out of the room but Andy was stopped by another student who said, I need to talk to you.

Okay, said Andy and walked towards the woman who said, I would be careful with James.

    What do you mean?

    He’s not your normal kid.

Like has he got a disability or what?

No, he doesn’t have a disability, just be careful with him, that’s all I’m asking you to do.

    Wait. What’s your name?

    Susan.

Thanks, said Andy and watched her walk back to the classroom.

Andy was in his history class when he turned around. He hadn’t seen James. He raised his hand and said to the teacher, Miss I was wondering where James is.

I don’t know, Andy. He hasn’t come in today.

But I saw him this morning.

He might have needed to leave early for something, now that you have so many questions, who was the first emperor of Rome?

That would be Augustus Caesar in the year 31BC.

    Good, now pay attention.

Yes miss, said Andy and turned around and saw an empty chair. He saw Susan on the other side of the empty chair and smiled. After class finished, he grabbed Susan’s arm. They huddled in the corner and he said, Where is he?

    How should I know?

    What do you know?

I know you shouldn’t trust him.

I don’t, I just want to know what you know.

Fine, come over to my house after school.

I can’t, I have my little sister to look after, after school. Mum and dad are out.

Then take her with you to my house.

    Why?

Because I said so, or you will not know what has happened to James.

    Is he hurt?

Talk more after school, said Susan and walked away before Andy could say anything else.

He went to his next class when school finished, he walked towards the car and saw his mum at the car waiting and said to her, Hey mum. A friend of mine at school wants me to come over, for an hour or so.

Say you can’t that you have to look after your sister, said Mary

She said to bring her along.

And who is she, your girlfriend? said Mary.

Mum no she’s just a friend and we are not close, just friends.

Hum, okay, be careful I want you home no later than 9pm, said Mary.

Okay thanks mum, said Andy and took his sister’s hand and said, We are going to my friend’s house for a bit, you okay with that?

    Sure, said Lily.

So, he and Lily walked towards Susan’s house. They turned around and waved to their mum and went in the car and drove off to Susan’s place.

When they go to her place Lily saw the dog and went to play with it. While Andy was watching her play with the dog Susan came outside with a book and showed him. What is this? said Andy looking confused.

This is James’s book from 1998.

I don’t understand. Was it when he was at school?

    Yes.

    That can’t be. He’s only 19, I think.

    His’s immortal.

What does that have to do with him being missing?

Because he is not missing. He left.

Do his parents know about this?

I don’t know but I think that’s why he was not at school today.

But I saw him this morning and the first three periods but he wasn’t in the just history class.

He wasn’t in history class back then either.

That doesn’t mean anything, said Andy. He then looked and saw that both the dog and his sister were missing.

Where’s Lily? said Andy and then called for her but got no responses. Where did she go? said Andy looking at Susan.

    How should I know?

This was your whole plan. Inviting me and my sister to your house to talk about James as if he’s from another planet or not human. It’s all you.

Look if I knew where your sister was I would tell you, but I don’t.

Well, your dog is missing too.

    I know.

You either tell me where she is or I’m calling the cops for kidnapping.

    I don’t know.

TELL ME WHERE SHE IS! yelled Andy in an angry tone.

I DON’T KNOW! yelled Susan in response.

Andy just sat on the floor with his hands on his head and started worrying. He then said, Mum is going to kill me. I’m supposed to look after her and now she’s missing.

    It’s not your fault.

No, it’s yours, said Andy looking at Susan.

It’s not mine either, kids wander off, that’s all.

Not under my care they don’t.

    Your blaming me for this?

"Yes, I am, I’m saying that you’re responsible. And if she
