CHAPTER ONE

Cabin Bound

What am I getting myself into? I whispered to myself as I tossed my backpack and sleeping bag into Josh’s dad’s SUV. I jumped in the backseat, and we were off, heading north.

I wasn’t sure what I’d been thinking when I agreed to go to my friend’s family cabin for a long weekend to celebrate his birthday. At thirteen, we’re kind of too old for birthday parties, but this was different. Josh was my best friend. How was I supposed to say no to him? Not happening.

So naturally, I’d said, Sure, why not? The only thing is, I had never been up north. But I guess there’s a first time for everything, right?

The Foleys’ cabin was a little more than three hours away on Leech Lake in northern Minnesota. On the way there, I was stuck in the middle seat between Josh and our other friend, Artie. Being in the middle seat was the worst. I had to lean forward to look past my friends’ heads if I wanted to see anything out the side windows.
