Movement saves lives. If someone comes at you with a knife, you have two options: move out of the way or get stabbed. The concept works in several ways, and I'll explain how to handle various scenarios in greater detail in later chapters.

Perceptions are important, and you must be aware of them to remain safe. Ask yourself the following questions: Do I look like a person who would be an easy victim. Does my house appear uninhabited. Am I walking with confidence. What about those around me.

Baselines are important in all intelligence work. You can’t know if you're about to walk into an unsafe situation unless you're familiar with what's normal for a particular place.

The final rule is situational awareness, which is the most important thing I learned while in the CIA. It is the cornerstone of my philosophy. Nothing can keep you safe if you’re not aware of what’s happening around you.

The most important thing I learned in the CIA is situational awareness. It’s best to avoid any kind of violent confrontation, and it’s your knowledge of situational awareness that allows you to act before a crisis occurs.

By asking the man what time it was, I had completely removed the element of surprise. I knew that if he attacked, I’d need one and a half seconds to defend myself and my wife. By being alert to your surroundings, you can recognize when something is amiss and take action.
