CHAPTER ONE

Getting Ready

I raised my rifle to my shoulder. I took off the safety and aimed at the old steel coffee can 150 feet ahead.

Whenever you’re ready, Quincy, Dad said.

I closed my right eye and peered through the scope. I took a short breath and held it.

I squeezed the trigger and fired. BOOM! The sound of the gunshot was immediately followed by the sound of metal hitting metal as the coffee can went flying off the fence post.

Nice job, kiddo. Those bears don’t stand a chance this weekend, Dad said.

I couldn’t believe it was finally time! Dad has been going up to an old hunting lodge in northern Maine since he was a kid. He had let me tag along the last few years, but I had to hang out in the cabin. This year, I was old enough to go on my first bear hunt!

As we walked back to the house from our final practice session, Dad pulled out his usual list of everything we needed for the trip. We’d gone over it 100 times, but Dad takes packing for the trip very seriously.
