    CHAPTER ONE

    Tagged, We’re It

    Pronghorns? I asked. What are they? Some kind of paranormal creature or monster?

    My dad just laughed, and so did my Uncle Gianni, who everyone called Uncle G.

    They’re like antelope and kind of like goats, my dad explained. Sort of…

    But they’re not really either, Uncle G. added. Antelope are in Africa, and they’re goats by nickname only.

    "So they’re some sort of strange hybrid of neither of those animals, I said. Cool."

    Before that conversation last year, I never really knew what pronghorns were. They sounded like something Dad and Uncle G. made up, but they’re not. All I knew was they have curved horns on their heads that are a bit thorny looking.

    Oh, and Dad and my uncle decided they wanted to try hunting them. So much so they applied for pronghorn tags so they could try to get a few in Wyoming. I learned last year that a tag is like a permission slip for hunters.

    Dad and Uncle G. had talked about pronghorn hunting a lot over the past year or two. They didn’t get the tags last year but hoped this season their luck would change.

    I’ve gone hunting plenty of times with my dad. We’ve hunted small game such as wild turkeys and foxes here in New Jersey. Once, I
