‘We Were Double Trouble!’

On our first day of school, we were excited but a little reluctant when Mum put us on the bus. As we stepped out at the front gate of Gordonton School, we saw Miss Williamson riding her big old grey horse through the gates. It was love at first sight. Our first teacher rode to school every morning and the school provided a small paddock for her horse during the day. We were smitten and spent morning break, lunchtime and after school patting him and feeding him apples and Vegemite sandwiches.

The next two years were a great time for us, running around the farm, helping feed calves and helping Mum in the garden.

The school offered us the basics of reading, writing and arithmetic. On
