    BOOK 2 OF THE SERIES

    PADRE ISLAND KIDS

    Chapter 1: Corpus Christi, Texas

We lived in Corpus Christi, Texas. The year was 1959. We previously lived in Laredo where my brother and I were born. I am a short stocky kid; Dale is my name. My younger brother’s name is Lonnie. He is a big kid, a really big kid.

My first year of school was at a private school in an Episcopal Church. I am not even an Episcopalian. I was at an instant disadvantage. I started school a year ahead of my age group because I passed some sort of test. I was admitted to school the shortest and smallest kid in my class. This never changed as long as I lived, much to my embarrassment.

My mother taught school in West Oso; it was a rough school. She would drop me off in the morning, and I would wave goodbye to her. The Episcopalian school was a lot better than going to day care. I hated day care with a passion.

The day care Lonnie and I went to was horrible. There was a huge fat lady there that made us take naps. It was her relax time. If you did not laydown on your pallet, she paddled you with her ping pong paddle.

The big day care lady made going to school at a church look like a piece of cake. Although I must say, I will take pie over cake any day of the week. I was so glad to get away from her.

The first day of school was exciting. I had a brand-new lunch box. It was made out of metal. It was shaped like a barn and was painted like a barn. It had a matching thermos.

I did not acclimate well to school. One day at recess I made my get away. I climbed the monkey cage next to the fence and leapt from the cage to the top of the fence. I was out of there.

I walked back down Mac Ardle Street all the way back to Jo Anne Street, where we lived. I climbed through my bedroom window. Then I went to the refrigerator and got out a jar of jelly. I made myself a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. I poured myself a glass of milk and was eating my lunch when Mom came into the house. Oh man she was mad at me.

I suffered the punishment of the cowhide belt. It was a horrible belt that still had the cow’s hair on it. I did the circle belt dance as she administered her loving punishment. She used to say, This hurts me more than it does you. I never skipped school the rest of my life. It was not worth it.

My best friend lived next door to us. His name was Steve Farris. He was an only child. His father raised big German Shepard dogs. They were the vicious type of dogs. He trained them for rich people to guard their houses from would be intruders. I did not like those dogs, and they instilled an awareness of them in me for the rest of my life.

I was up earlier than the rest of the kids on the block. Saturday was my mom’s sleep-in morning. My morning consisted of a
