I am calling this episode "don't forget the perennials" Now, the idea for this episode came from a conversation I had last Sunday evening with the father, his name is James, of one of the scouts in my son's troop. You may recall that I recorded last week's episode on Saturday because we were planning on going tubing with the scouts at the mountain where my son and I work. While the scouts continued to tube, I went into the lodge to have a cup of hot chocolate to warm up and Jim and I got to talking. Jim is an avid gardener and food preserver. I'm not sure if he'd consider himself a homesteader. I've never asked him. But, as we started talking one thing led to another and we got onto the topic of perennials and I thought, "I've got to talk about this on the podcast!" But, in part this is also a follow on to last week's episode on sustainability. And in part, this is an addition to my series on gardening. Time of the year when homesteaders and gardeners are anxious to get their fingers in some dirt. People down south may have already started seeds in greenhouses. Maybe you've even direct sown a few things. Those of us up north are a still a ways out from that. Unless you have special equipment like high tunnels. Where I live, most people put their gardens in on Memorial Day weekend. Officially last average frost date is mid-May and so many people just wait until Memorial Day weekend to plant the bulk of their gardens. This is the time of the year when many content creators, podcasters and Youtubers are putting out garden related content. Where/when/how to buy seeds. When/where/how to start seeds. All of that great garden content. But, what ends up getting lost in some of that are the perennials. And that is something that I am VERY guilty of. In fact, if you go back to E43 where I share 6 of my biggest regrets in homesteading, is that I waited so long to introduce perennials to our homestead. So, today we are going to talk perennials, what they are, why you want to include them, some reasons why sometimes they get skipped, and finally some of the perennials I am excited about trying this year: 1. Skirret 2. Good King Henry 3. Lovage 4. Jerusalem Artichokes 5. Indian Potato (Apios Americana) 6. Sochan 7. Horseradish Enjoy!!
