Random Introduction with Lots of Rambling

This story starts one week after my little brother Oz accidentally got Mrs. McKenzie's cat stuck in a glue trap.

Please don't ask. I understand you want to know, but it's a different story for a different time.

I can only say that Whiskers meowed all the way home, pulling himself with his front paws while dragging the back ones along with that glue trap. Man, Oz felt terrible. He did, but as I said, it was an accident.

By the way, my name is Iggy. You've been here before and most likely read my other case files. I've taken to calling them case files because it sounds better than a diary or journal. And let's be honest, with everything happening over the summer, that's what they are—case files.

Everything started with the sad death of our neighbor Mr. Chesterson. Shortly afterward, there was a big, big estate sale, and everything owned by Mr. Chesterson got sold. Most of those items ended up scattered around our sprawling gated community known as Whispering Pines.

You know Whispering Pines. You've been here before. On the outside, it looks like every other suburban gated neighborhood. But the truth is, strange things happen here, and it all started with Mr. Chesterson's estate sale.

If you're reading this case file, you know all the stories. You've read about the large chest that brought the plastic toy dinosaurs to life and how they nearly destroyed the neighborhood. You've probably heard about the soda pop machine that gave us all superpowers when we drank the soda. And I’m sure you are familiar with the strange handkerchief that brought our snot to life which only grew into a giant blob that attacked us.

It's safe to say that I've experienced quite a bit as a twelve-year-old kid. But nothing prepared me for this next mystery.

I thought we were safe. I did. I had a plan all mapped out and ready to go. I would save the neighborhood, rescue Jenn from danger, and once again be the hero. Parades would happen in my honor. But as you can tell, that's not quite what happened. Life in Whispering Pines sometimes takes you down a side quest. And let's face it; side quests are only a little fun. They tend to distract you from the actual mission.

Regardless, this story starts the morning Oz woke me up by placing something cold on my neck.

    Captain’s Log: 001

Iawoke to a sharp sensation on my neck, like ice piercing my skin and crawling down my spine. I felt the condensation from the frozen object roll down my back as I groaned and tossed the blanket off. The sensation persisted, and I glanced down to see Aaron laughing.

Iggy, Oz said from behind him. You're awake!

When I wiped the liquid from my neck, I saw that my hand was red, and I licked the fluid off my fingers. Cherry?

What did you put on my neck? I asked Oz.

That was cherry popsicle, Oz replied with a chuckle.

Oz, why would you put a cherry popsicle on me? I asked rubbing the back of my neck and feeling my fingers start to stick.

We just needed you to get up, Aaron chimed in. We tried waking you three or four times. But you seemed to be sleeping pretty hard.

Yeah, I said. But that's not a reason to put a popsicle on my neck. It's drying and getting all sticky.

Well, Oz said. We got a problem, Iggy.

You always have a problem, I said. And this time, I'm not going to take part in any of your adventures. We got some work to do, remember?

Aaron stood in front of my new Mercury Hale poster. My entire room was starting to become a Mercury-style room. Thanks to my new 3D Printer, wait, sorry. Dad, if you're reading this, Oz is the one that has been printing 3D versions of Mercury out.

Anyway, where was I? Oh, yeah.

Aaron was starting to take a liking to the weird and strange, which is why he was always over-asking me questions about Mercury's adventures. But it wasn't just his adventures. My room had become the place to study the history of the one that started all these mysteries.

    Mr. Chesterson.

I pushed my bookshelf away from the wall a few inches and reached behind it to grab the folder I had hidden. In big, bold black marker, I had written the words. I placed the folder on my bed.

    CASE FILE: CHESTERSON.

    What is that? Aaron asked.

It’s everything he has collected on Mr. Chesterson, Oz said, rolling his eyes.

I pushed Oz to the side. This is my life’s work.

Aaron cracked open the file and started pulling everything out. There isn’t much here for it being your life’s work.

I’m just getting started, I said.

Say, Iggy, Oz said. I have a question.

What is it, Oz? I groaned. The kid needed to understand the importance of what we were doing.

Why were you saying Jenn’s name in your sleep?

I looked up, my face burning. I wasn’t saying Jenn’s name.

Actually, you were, Aaron said. You said: ‘I’ll save you, Jenn.’

I grabbed a towel from the floor and started towards the door, trying to hide the blush in my face. Whatever, I'm going to shower, and then I got work to do.

Oh, that's right, Oz said. I forgot why we woke you up. We have a problem.

    Don't care, I said.

But this one is creepy, Oz said. I think the neighborhood is in trouble.

"The neighborhood has been in trouble all summer.
