    PREFACE

What You Will Discover in This Book

Born in Holland, Saskia Röell grew up in a lively, free-spirited home with her sister and three brothers. Their household was filled with many pets—turtles, rabbits, dogs, cats, goats, and horses. Surrounded by an extended family of doctors, Saskia was introduced to the power of healing at a young age. It is a fascination that never left her.

In her twenties, Saskia lived for years on a kibbutz in Israel. This was followed by adventures such as living with a Bedouin tribe in the Sinai desert, hitchhiking through Japan (and sleeping in temples), and being held at gunpoint in the jungle on the Ivory Coast.

After settling down in Asia, she became fascinated by Eastern healing philosophies and the mind-body connection. Eventually, she returned to Holland to learn more and began studying with Burt Goldman, the late mind-science pioneer (the American monk), and began a lifelong exploration of over twenty different healing modalities. Saskia’s passion is the ongoing study of how unhealed emotional trauma can affect a woman’s ability to conceive and give birth.

Saskia began seeing clients in Holland, then continued to expand her practice and studies in the United States. She holds a number of certificates in advanced healing techniques (covered in Chapter Ten).

Saskia’s clients include A-list actors, Hollywood producers, athletes, CEOs, successful business owners, and people from all walks of life. She works with women in Australia, South Africa, Eastern and Western Europe, Asia, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

Her success stories speak for themselves. Saskia has identified a profound connection between subconscious fear, negative beliefs, and unexplained infertility. She has chosen to share them to inspire women who have almost given up hope.

    INTRODUCTION

    Why Can’t I Conceive?

For the past two decades, I have worked with women whose unhealed trauma has impacted their plans regarding conception, pregnancy, and birth. Much of what follows are their stories of hope—after they had lost it and thought that motherhood was not on the cards for them.

Eventually, these women were able to release their fears, create new beliefs, reprogram their minds and bodies, and become pregnant.

If these stories sound like we just blew fairy dust around and everyone got pregnant, that’s not what happened. All of these women were willing to overcome initial skepticism and work committedly—for a minimum of four months—to reprogram their bodies and minds.

The stress of infertility can make you feel insecure. If you feel like the women in these stories have become pregnant because they’re just lucky, please realize that this is not the case. I’m here with a positive and empowering message.

Most of the women you’ll be introduced to are now mothers because they discovered the deeper beliefs, issues, and traumas that were blocking their fertility—sometimes for up to eleven years. They allowed their bodies to get back into the innate, original, healthy conceive mode.

There is such a thing as conceive mode (my phrase for it); it works. These women all learned to trust their bodies absolutely and, in a variety of ways, came to understand that getting pregnant can also be fun. That, finally, their babies could come in.

Rachel: Aren’t you guys pregnant yet?

I’ve been trying for five years, said Rachel (age forty-three). All my friends have children. I feel so lonely when they ask, ‘Aren’t you guys pregnant yet?’ I feel ashamed of my body, like I’m not a full woman. I feel like I let my partner down. My friends don’t know what to say when I have my period. I had a miscarriage last year, but I don’t want anyone to know.

What do you tell people when they ask? I said.

I feel like I have to take a stand. Maybe I should say, ‘No, we don’t want children.’ I feel like there needs to be a public explanation as to why we still don’t have kids, she answered. Why can’t I get pregnant? What’s wrong with me? I’ve done IVF, I’ve changed my diet, I had my hormones checked and the doctors can’t find anything.

There is nothing wrong with you. If you’re menstruating and the doctors can’t find anything, we need to find a way to access your fertile energy. For reasons we don’t know yet, your subconscious is blocking conception. If you are physically healthy, we have to look deeper. We need to find the subconscious emotional reasons that are blocking access to your fertile energy.

    Maybe I’m just not fertile.

Infertility is just a label. And it’s very often wrong. If there is no medical reason why you can’t conceive, then we look for the subconscious fears that are keeping you blocked.

Is that really true? she asked.

The years of trying—the repeated failures, the lack of support from friends, and the repeated visits to the fertility clinics—had all taken their toll on Rachel. She had developed deep issues about her self-worth as a woman.

For her, the stress of trying to get pregnant for all those years was driving her crazy. It was also putting her body into a state of frozen fear.

Fear lives in the subconscious mind. To your subconscious, it makes no difference if there’s a war coming, or you have fears such as Maybe I’m not a good mother or Maybe I’ll lose my career or Maybe my partner will leave me. The subconscious mind perceives all fear in the same way. Your body, your mind, and your emotions are seamlessly connected.

I told Rachel that if her conscious and subconscious mind were not in alignment, it made sense that she would face challenges with conception.

She had never considered this. In our sessions together, Rachel uncovered a deep-seated fear about motherhood that surprised her. We released it, then she concentrated daily to develop strong new beliefs about her ability to be a mother.

She began to practice a new belief system. Slowly, she connected with her fertile energy. Her beliefs changed. Her new sense of happiness and expanded sense of femininity were infectious. Her relationship with her partner changed and became stronger. In three months, Rachel became pregnant. She wrote me after her baby was born to say that motherhood was amazing and that she already wanted another baby.

    The things I’ve heard

Is there something wrong with me?

Is motherhood not meant for me?

    "Should I give up?

How long do I keep trying?

I have heard these questions for over two decades. If you’re like many women who try for years to get pregnant, without results, you can start to doubt yourself and your body (which you secretly become ashamed of). You are embarrassed to face your partner, family, friends, and the social circle in which you live. Deep down, you may think there’s something wrong with you, and you may feel wounded to the core of your femininity. There is hopelessness and doubt that there is any resource left to turn to.

Here’s the official definition of infertility, which millions of women in the United States experience:

Infertility means not being able to get pregnant after one year of trying (or six months if a woman is 35 or older). Women who can get pregnant but are unable to stay pregnant may also be infertile. About 10 percent of women (6.1 million) in the United States ages 15–44 have difficulty getting pregnant or staying pregnant, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).¹

What breaks my heart is that, if you’re struggling with infertility, you may not know that you can increase the chances of getting pregnant using a mind-body program. There’s clinical proof of this, which I’ll explain later.

In the past twenty years, I’ve endeavored to help women from all over the world. These are the kinds of things you may have experienced:

You’ve almost given up hope. You’ve tried IVF, sometimes up to sixteen times. You do acupuncture, eat the right foods, practice yoga. You say prayers and affirmations and have a vision board. You’ve been to countless doctor’s appointments.

Nothing has worked. And the reproductive emotional roller coaster drives you crazy.

One day you’re hopeful, the next day you’re hopeless. You ask, Is there really any chance left or should I give up on my biggest dream?

You’ve been diagnosed with unexplained infertility because doctors can’t find a medical reason why you can’t get pregnant. You’re sent home empty-handed.

Often, you’re told that you’re too old—or that your eggs are too old. You may have been told that donor eggs are your only option.

Having been diagnosed with unexplained infertility, you may not have been given a roadmap. You feel like you’re in a barren landscape with no idea where to go.

There is definitely a roadmap. There is a way out of unexplained infertility. If you have struggled to get pregnant and nothing has worked out so far, here is your hope.

    Unexplained Infertility Explained

If you come to me with a diagnosis of unexplained infertility, I will consider it good news. Did you know that doctors have found that 80 percent of women who struggle with unexplained infertility should actually be able to conceive?

The big question is: if the reason isn’t medical, what blocks you from conceiving?

The short answer is fear, which can be conscious or subconscious. Fear is the underlying reason for your inability to conceive. It blocks your body.

    But why?

Because your body knows innately that it should not procreate when you are in fear. Along with having a physical body, you also have an emotional body (which is deeply connected to your physical body). For example, when you look into the fridge and see a delicious dessert, your mouth begins to water, or your skin gets goose bumps when you’re scared.

This can also be seen with war veterans who are emotionally traumatized. Their physical health is impacted in many ways, including neurological diseases, insomnia, digestive problems, and other unexplained illnesses.

Fear produces a fight-or-flight response; the body will often react by not procreating. It is just not safe to conceive.

Your body is very wise; it needs to feel safe. And not only your body. You need to feel emotionally and mentally safe as well. If you have fears at conscious or subconscious levels, they can block your body from producing conception energy; instead, there is contraction energy.

I have listened to every fear you can think of. All of them are equally important. Just like Rachel, you want to get pregnant but have one foot on the gas pedal and one on the brake. Progress is halted. You stay stuck.

    Mind-Body Programs Increase

    the Chances of Success

How do you go from realizing you have fears blocking the path to pregnancy to then reprogramming your body and mind to successfully conceive?

According to a large, federally funded Johnson & Johnson study, 55 percent of previously infertile women who regularly participated in a mind-body infertility program conceived within six months. This is compared to only 20 percent in a control group that used no such techniques.²

Research published in Fertility and Sterility (the publication of the American Society of Reproductive Medicine) has shown that participation in a mind-body program significantly decreases the stress-related physical and psychological symptoms that often arise when struggling with infertility.³

Another study in Fertility and Sterility revealed that women who participate in a mind-body program while undergoing IVF treatment have a significantly higher pregnancy rate than those who do not (52 percent versus 20 percent).

    My Story of Unexplained Immobility

I once went on a memorable and beautiful vacation in Europe with my eighty-eight-year-old mom and daughter. My mother was amazingly fit and healthy. We visited museums and cathedrals, spending so much time laughing and having fun that we vowed to do it every year. Life felt like a dream before leaving Spain and flying back to the United States.

As the plane rolled to a stop, I watched the stewardess take a call from the pilot. I could see her face drop and all energy leave her body. She hung up and started to scream, Evacuate, get out now! My mother was sitting one row behind me. Smoke began flooding the cabin; I could not see or reach my daughter. I tugged at my mother’s seatbelt, but it was stuck. People were screaming as they climbed past us, over the seats, to get out of the plane. Finally, I got my mom free. I still could not find my daughter.
