    This book is dedicated to

    Imani Vera Walker

We have sought the Lord for the individual theme of your life. Imani (pronounced ee-mon-ee) means faith in Swahilli. Vera means true in Latin. Our last name is Walker, which means to walk. Always remember the theme of your life is to walk in true faith. It took true faith in God’s word to give birth to you the way we did, and it is by true faith that you will fulfill the call of God on your life

—in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ!

    We love you!

    Acknowledgments

We thank our Heavenly Father and our Lord Jesus Christ for giving us the assignment of writing this book. We are thankful for the divine process that Holy Spirit has led us through during this season of our lives. We love you dearly.

We thank Vera Ford (Rich’s mother) and Harold Guidry for their love and support in helping this project move forward. We would also like to thank Sharron Hampton (Karla’s mother), Bennie Hampton (Karla’s father) and Jeanette Pittmon (Karla’s grandmother) for their gifts of love that indirectly helped us complete this project.

We would like to thank our pastor, Bishop Keith A. Butler, and our first lady, Pastor Deborah Butler. We appreciate you both for being huge examples of what it means to be a living sacrifice unto God. Your mentorship has contributed enormously to our effectiveness in following the Lord in our lives.

We also thank Ptolemy and Tosha Pruden, Chemeka Linson, and Julie Domey for your faithfulness, love, and support.

And a very special thanks to Dr. Sharon Miller for writing the foreword and being so dedicated to your profession.

We pray that God will meet your every need and desire for all the love and support that you have shown to us.

    With deep gratitude,

In my professional opinion, this book is a must read for any patient who wants a natural child-birthing experience. Why? Well, here are some reasons:

    •    A successful natural child-birthing experience starts in your mind. You must believe you can do it, which takes faith. This book discusses faith and practical principles needed to cope and address the pain of natural childbirth. The coping skills that I have had the opportunity to observe Karla and Rich do include, but are not limited to calming music, a birthing ball, the use of water, different rocking movements, and Rich giving Karla spiritual encouragement and emotional support. They have labored and delivered using natural childbirth techniques with each child.

For instance, Karla has labored in water and given birth on a birthing stool, as well as a traditional queen-size bed and a regular hospital bed. During the birth of their first born baby (Imani Vera Walker), Rich put gloves on and literally assisted with the delivery by guiding the baby out of the birth canal. It was a priceless moment to have their baby first touched by the hands of the father while I observed closely so I could intervene—if necessary.

Their various natural birthing experiences coupled with their ministry gives the Walkers an ability to provide skillful and Godly wisdom on ways to enhance your birthing experience. In this book, the Walkers also express the importance of working cooperatively with medical professionals who believe that giving birth was intended to be a natural process. The ob-gyn must be committed to a nonintervention approach unless the health of the mother or baby is compromised.

As a veteran ob-gyn attending, I strongly believe it is important for the patient to have a doctor who will not force them into a cookie-cutter medical approach. The physician must individualize care, respect patient’s autonomy and be wholeheartedly invested in the success of their natural child-birthing plan whenever possible.

I personally believe that when the patient, their support team, and the doctor reach a consensus, it eliminates controversy; and the birth progresses more smoothly. Therefore, it is essential for patients who are interested in a natural childbirth to partner with a physician who will allow them the autonomy of executing their desired birthing plan in a safe and healthy manner.

    •    The Walkers have a tremendous spiritual, soulful, and mental connection with each other. They fit each other like a glove fits a hand. They compliment each other like peanut butter and jelly. They are perfectly matched to travel through the birthing process together and to lend valuable counsel to others trying to do the same.
